This day last week, our daughter graduated from school! Even though the big LC looms , it's a time of reflection and a significant milestone in our lives. I remember leaving Holles St, taking her home, and the nurse's parting words were, "Look after her." Little did I realise what that truly entailed (and entails - because it never ends!) None of us could have predicted what lay ahead: The friends who've come and gone Changing schools A horrible pandemic and the fear and loneliness that went with it Watching the world tear itself apart All with the backdrop of a generation that sees much of life through the prism of social media. So much more comes under the category of "can't even"!! And yet here we are, celebrating a graduation. Life is tough, no matter what age you are. The messages from the teachers during the graduation ceremony were poignant: Be kind and look after each other. One teacher mentioned, "Answer the question you're asked." It is related to the LC, but I guess it could apply to all of us!! But the one that resonated with me was this: "Improve your relationship with your thinking." It referred to critical thinking, but also brought up a few other gems worthy of consideration: Whether something is negative or positive is up to you. Whether something is an opportunity or a challenge is up to you. Whether you apply critical thinking or run down the rabbit hole, again, is up to you. ️ You have control of your thinking ... use that control wisely! This cohort of school leavers has a tough road ahead. ️ But we can't walk the road for them. ♀️♂️ All we can do is be there and offer our love and support. ❤️ Because in the end, regardless of jobs/titles/careers, that's all that matters. It's our job, not just as parents but as humans, because that is what humanity is all about.
Oh best of luck to her Sharon Rossignuolo Barbara and I both have daughters doing the LC.
Lovely thoughtful post Sharon, wishing your daughter the very best in LC and beyond.
Your post reminded me of when I left Holles Street with my first born in 2006, thinking back then “omg they’re letting me leave with a three days old baby and don’t even know if I can do it”. That vulnerability. The fear of failing. Nobody trained us (most of us) and we’re talking about a precious life. But none of my fears were founded. She’s a year away from graduating now and proof that you don’t need to be ready to be ready. You can do it! Learn, love, grow, adjust. Now imagine we’d see the same confidence put into people in the workplace as the nurses in Holles Street did. The new generation can only thrive 💛
Huge milestone no doubt and congratulations on your achievements as parents and to your daughters achievements too. Graduations from secondary level are indeed a rite of passage for our young people. So much learning has come yet the most learning is yet to come 🙏 Well done again Sharon Rossignuolo and Marco Rossignuolo 🍾🎉🫶🏻
How did that happen so fast?! Congratulations!
