Six years ago, I made a bold decision that forever altered the course of my life. I stepped out of my comfort zone and left behind a 20-year career in human services to pursue something entirely new: a career in the trades. More specifically, I became a Traffic Signal Technician. At the ripe young age of 41, I bought my first pair of composite toe boots–boots that felt heavy with the weight of my decision. I dug my first trench, pulled my first run of wire, hung my first street name sign, and wired my first traffic signal head—all moments that felt like victories in their own right. At 42, I began apprenticeship schooling, and at 43, algebra came back to haunt me in the form of Ohm's Law. But, those boots had somehow gotten much lighter. At 46, after four years of schooling and 8,000 field hours, I earned my certificate of completion from the Department of Labor. Today, at 47, I’m proud to share that I passed my IMSA Senior Traffic Technician Level III certification. As a black woman in a male-dominated field, this is about more than a title or certification. It represents resilience, determination, sacrifice, grit, commitment and an unwavering belief in myself and my abilities. The quote, “You are never too old to set a new goal or to dream a new dream” has never felt so true. So, for anyone out there hesitating to start something new, whether it’s a career change, a personal goal, or just taking that first step toward reinvention, hear me loud and clear: YOU are the goal. YOU are the dream. And YOU have everything within you to make it happen!
