🌱 A green financial system can power sustainable economic growth. 🌱     We've joined 14 other leading civil society organisations on this latest briefing, setting out how the new Chancellor, #RachelReeves, can deliver on her promise of #change to unlock the massive growth opportunity that is the UK’s #GreenTransition.    The net zero transition is the UK’s most significant economic opportunity - capable of adding £57 billion to UK #GDP by 2030 if the right steps are taken. Centring green growth in her economic plan is her best chance to get the UK economy back on track.     The new Chancellor must address the climate and biodiversity crises, build resilience and crowd in private investment to deliver on Labour’s promises of growth and stability. Reeves must prioritise rebuilding market confidence to unlock the private capital needed to revitalise Britain’s economy. Given the great dangers and immediate steps needed to solve climate change, the UK has a historic chance to lead globally in sustainable financing. By means of efficient policies, the UK may become a net-zero financial hub, stimulate innovation, and drive economic growth—directly benefiting the British people by thus nurturing a dynamic, resilient, and fair society. Giving green investment a priority after the election would help us to solve urgent issues such as regional disparity, income inequality, and the net-zero transformation. Cooperation amongst government agencies, big businesses, financial institutions, and SMEs is very vital if we are to reach these targets. Overcoming present obstacles will depend much on simplifying reporting criteria and raising data verifiability. Creative initiatives like Project Perseus may simplify data collection, therefore allowing SMEs to fully engage in the green economy and help to meet our net-zero objectives. One important area where significant influence may be made is retrofitting the energy-inefficient houses across the United Kingdom. With more than 15 million households needing improvements, this project may lower GHG emissions by 5%, boost 580,000 jobs by 2030, and have major social and financial advantages. Success depends on a whole strategy, including raising awareness, helping the supply chain, and drawing private sector capital. Post-Brexit Britain may become the hub of sustainable finance by encouraging interactions among the government, authorities, and the community of sustainable finance. To build a strong, rich, and sustainable future, it demands coordinated, purposeful action. The UK is well suited to spearhead this effort; the moment for action is now. How could a mission-oriented industrial strategy help Scotland’s new First Minister achieve his three priorities of growing the economy, eradicating child poverty and tackling the climate emergency?   A new report from Laurie Macfarlane and I in our project with Future Economy Scotland sets out a roadmap for replacing traditional, sector-focused strategies with cross-sectoral ‘missions’ that address major societal challenges. It identifies four key principles that should underpin a mission-oriented industrial strategy in Scotland, and sets out a missions framework focused on delivering a just transition to net zero by 2045. Instead, Scotland should embrace a 'mission-oriented' approach that drives cross-sectoral investment and innovation towards clear societal goals. ⏺ The Scottish Government should move from acting as a 'lender of last resort' to an 'investor of first resort' – proactively shaping new markets and technological landscapes. ⏺ A new 'social contract' between government and business is needed, with better alignment of risks and rewards through tools like conditionalities on public funding. ⏺ Implementing this approach requires major changes to policy delivery, resource allocation, and the operation of government institutions. 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿’𝘀 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 by Will O'Leary; E3G    With the UK’s General Election on the horizon, #netzero is firmly on the #ballot box. Recent weeks have seen the #LabourParty flesh out their #plans to deliver UK #GreenGrowth – with the long-awaited 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣 released just days after Labour’s new 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙮.   This #blog sets out #assessment of these flagship documents, why Labour’s recognition of the vital importance of #greeninvestment for #UK growth is welcome, and the steps Britain’s next #Government must take to capture the net zero #economic opportunity.     Labour’s Green Prosperity Plan (#GPP) offers a stripped-back approach to delivering UK #greengrowth, with proposed public #investment reduced from the £28 billion per year previously pledged to around £15 billion a year. As the #Conservatives are already investing about £10 #billion a year, this means #Labour will invest just under £5 #billion a year more. This has particularly hit the homes agenda, with the #commitment for upgrading homes worth up to £6 billion per year scaled back significantly. The headline #commitments which remain are: ✅ Decarbonising the power system by 2030  ✅ £8.3 billion for the publicly owned Great British Energy to invest in clean energy  ✅ A (reduced) Warm Homes Plan to upgrade 5 million more homes by 2030, investing a further £6.6bn over the course of parliament.  ✅ A National Wealth Fund capitalised to the tune of £7.3 billion to invest in industries such as electric vehicles, clean steel, ports, and hydrogen.    With that aim in mind, Labour has also set out its vision for the future of #financialservices, with #sustainablefinance listed as a key pillar of Labour’s proposals. Capturing green growth #opportunities will undoubtedly be reliant on a world-leading #regulatoryframework for #greenfinance. On this, there are welcome #pledges to: ✅ Deliver a world-leading green finance regulatory framework, including commitments to set out a clear timeline for the much-delayed UK Green Taxonomy and for large private companies to be required to disclose 1.5-aligned transition plans  ✅ Prioritise interoperability by adopting ISSB and engaging in key international fora like #G7, #G20 International Platform on Sustainable Finance (#IPSF)  ✅ Financial Flow Tracking to ensure net zero policy is informed by data on investment flows.    The blog article link is here:

As the UK approaches the upcoming general election, the contrasting climate policies of our leading parties will immensely shape our economic landscape. The race to Net Zero is a focal point, where Conservative and Labour visions diverge, each crafting a distinctly different blueprint for the UK's pathway to a green economy. Labour's commitment to aggressive Net Zero targets aligns with calls for a robust interventionist role, championing expansive green public investments and strengthening environmental regulations. Their strategy forecasts leveraging significant Government initiatives to expedite the transition towards sustainable industries, potentially harmonising environmental benefits with the surge in labour market demands. Conversely, the Conservative stance traditionally emphasises the free market's role, proposing a less interventionist, but incentives-driven approach aiming to cultivate private innovation and investments within the green sector. Their policy positions suggest a belief in guiding but not steering the economy toward its Net Zero ambitions, underscoring the importance of competitiveness and private enterprise in the ecological transformation. Irrespective of the approach, the economic stakes are high, with Net Zero translating into a golden ticket for the UK's prosperity. Whichever direction the election sways, embracing a green agenda can potentially unlock an extra £90 billion GDP boost by 2030 and a surge in employment, with up to 1.7 million new job openings by 2050 in green industries. Industry transformation, electric vehicles, renewable energy solutions, and innovative low-carbon technologies bear the promise of reinvigorating communities and perpetuating economic robustness. It is imperative that our next government's policy framework aligns with these aspirations to ensure the UK emerges a forerunner in the global shift, converting climate pledges into a narrative of economic success. This election is more than a political contest; it's a deciding moment for our economic and environmental future. UK’s Green Transition: A New Era with Cautious Optimism The recent Labour government’s pivot towards green industries is a promising signal for investors. With the potential of five years of political stability, Britain is being touted as a more attractive destination for low-carbon investments. Yet, the road ahead is not without challenges. Despite the positive shift, concerns persist over the UK’s planning system, supply chain issues, and skills shortages. The U.S. Inflation Reduction Act still looms large, offering substantial subsidies that the UK may struggle to match. Labour’s ambition to cut emissions from electricity generation to net zero by 2030 and its commitment to renewable energy are commendable. The introduction of GB Energy and a £7.3bn National Wealth Fund are steps in the right direction. However, the scaling back of the original Green Prosperity Plan raises questions about the sufficiency of these measures.
