#Dinitrogenoxide (N2O) – commonly known as #laughinggas may receive EU harmonized classification and labeling as Specific Target Organ Toxicity – Repeated Exposure Category 1 (STOT RE 1) following France’s regulatory shift from last year. 🔷 In 2023, France enacted new rules for mandatory classification and labeling of N2O. The requirements go beyond what is required under the EU #CLP Regulation. In fact, France imposes to companies national #CLP rules, giving no space for operators to perform the self-classification by following the EU rules. Therefore, N2O shall now be classified and labeled as STOT RE 1. 🔷 On 4 November 2024, the EU validated the French measure and extended its application for the next 3 years. It’s expected that the EU will also include N2O in the EU Harmonized C&L List (Annex VI, Table 3 to #CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008) in one of the next #ATP to #CLP updates based on the ECHA’s RAC opinion.

🎯 Round Robin Testing to Improve Food Laboratory Analysis of #Cyanide in #Cassava 🏥 The natural occurrence of cyanogenic glycosides in cassava (tapioca) has long been identified as a food safety concern given the incidences of 'Konzo' disease in cassava-growing areas of sub-Saharan Africa. Konzo disease affects mostly children and breast-feeding mothers, and results in the abrupt onset of 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐬. As a consequence, most countries in the world have food regulations that limit the cyanide content in cassava and cassava products. 📛 Recently, however, the presence of cyanide in cassava and cassava products has also become a trade issue, with some imported products being 𝐫𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲. It appears to be the ambiguity of the definition of 'cyanide' and the resulting specified method that makes it an issue for trade. Free hydrocyanic acid can be very low (< 10 mg/kg) but the cyanide trapped in cyanoglycosides can be upward of 200 mg/kg in select instances. 🎯 A 'Round Robin' comparison test 'Cassava Chips RR2024', is being organised by AOAC SEA, the Asia Pacific Food Analysis Network (#APFAN), and the National Measurement Institute Australia (#NMIA) 🤝 These test materials are provided 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞 to all participants and the materials will be distributed across the region over the next few months. To date, materials have been given to laboratories in the #Pacific, #Indonesia and #Vietnam and in the future will be distributed to #SouthEastAsian and #African laboratories. 👉 A final report of this Round Robin study will be produced and emailed to all participants.
The Method Harmonization Working Group of the AOAC Southeast Asia section is inviting interested laboratories to participate in a round robin to determine hydrocyanic acid, including hydrocyanic acid bound in cyanogenic glycosides, in a processed ready-to-eat cassava chips sample using their own testing methods. Applied DNA Sciences today announced the receipt of a subcontract award from LRQA following a competitive tender for a pilot isotopic testing program.
