The Council of the EU has officially adopted its position on the new Green Claims Directive, marking a significant step towards addressing greenwashing and enabling consumers to make genuinely eco-friendly choices. The Directive sets minimum requirements for substantiating, communicating, and verifying environmental claims. Key Highlights: - Purpose: Combat greenwashing and provide consumers with reliable, comparable, and verifiable environmental information. - Scope: Applies to explicit environmental claims and labels, both public and private, covering products' or services' environmental impacts. - Clear and Evidence-Based: Companies must use clear criteria and the latest scientific evidence for their claims and labels. - Verification: Green claims must be verified by third-party independent experts before publication, with certain exemptions for eligible companies. - Support for SMEs: Includes guidelines, tools, and potential financial support to help SMEs comply with the new rules. - Climate-Related Claims: Introduces specific requirements for proving climate-related claims, including details about carbon credits. Next Steps: The Council's general approach will serve as the foundation for negotiations with the European Parliament to finalize the directive. Negotiations are set to commence in the new legislative cycle. The EU Council just agreed on a series of proposals to protect consumers from greenwashing 🙌 Early last year, a study found that over 50% of green claims by companies in the EU were vague or misleading, and 40% were completely unsubstantiated. So the new rules that are being introduced will ensure: - There are requirements for businesses to substantiate, communicate and verify their green claims - The aforementioned claims will need to be independently verified and proven with scientific evidence - That private environmental labels will only be approved if they demonstrate greater environmental ambition than existing label schemes We need to learn from this in impact measurement and stop estimating. One-size-fits-all proxy values IS estimating. You WILL get called out, and all your impact will count against you. And that just isn't right.

New EcoAct blog on the EU's proposed Green Claims Directive (GCD) and how it interacts with other recent proposals! Summary of some key points below. 💡 The GCD aims to cut down of greenwashing by requiring companies to submit evidence to back up their environmental claims (e.g. carbon neutral) - with implications for the use of carbon credits and environmental labelling schemes. 💡The GCD will carve an elevated role for credits generated by the EU's new Carbon Removals Certification Framework (CRCF), which establishes new quality criteria for carbon removals projects in the EU. 💡The CRCF is prompting more intense discussions about the potential to include carbon removals in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS). 💡The European Parliament and Council have published their GCD negotiating positions, but nothing is finalised yet. As always, lots to consider in the evolving world of climate claims and carbon markets - more details in the blog! https://lnkd.in/e2bYgKiT #GreenClaims #Greenwashing #Compliance #ClimateAction
