I took the liberty of rearranging the same for ease of understanding. I have also added some timelines which are only indicative and depends upon the twists and turns you take as given in the picture. Success – it's a word we all strive for, but what does it truly mean, especially in the world of law? Let's break it down, shall we? For Law Students (5 years): ·      Success begins with a thirst for knowledge and a commitment to learning. ·      It’s about mastering the fundamentals, honing your skills, and laying a strong foundation. ·      It is not just about grades; it's about the journey of growth and discovery. Are we doing enough to support FGLI lawyers in our industry? First-generation, limited-income (FGLI) lawyers and law students face unique challenges in the legal profession. MaryAnne Armstrong of Birch, Stewart, Kolasch & Birch, LLP (BSKB) highlights the psychological and financial barriers these individuals often encounter. Honored to have had an enriching panel discussion earlier this week with three exceptional first-generation law students – Hunter Foist, Neema Patel, and Juan Perez. All of them are final year students at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. Their journey from LSAT Prep to navigating the complexities of law school and beyond offered invaluable insights and guidance. 📚 From case briefing techniques to managing law school assignments and exploring diverse career paths within the legal profession, their stories were not just educational but deeply inspiring. But what truly stood out was the engaging conversation about the importance of acknowledging and valuing our unique timelines in achieving our goals. It's a powerful reminder that everyone's path is different, and that's perfectly okay. 💡 Moreover, the discussion took a profound turn as we delved into the topics of race and gender in the legal education system. In this week's #StudentSpotlight, meet TAP mentee Ian Mitchell Rodgers, Washington University in St. Louis School of Law Class of 2024 student: Q: What is your favorite food? A: My mother's Honey Garlic Glazed Salmon. Q: Why are you drawn to appellate work? A: I am interested in appellate work because the federal appellate courts are the most important adjudicators of laws that have real and palpable effects on society. Certiorari is granted on so few occasions; meaning a federal appellate court is the likely terminus and vital decisionmaker for a majority of issues. When the law does not reflect or protect the people it is enforced against, appellate work is the linchpin towards justice, equal protection, and reconciliation. Appellate work is the opportunity for zealous advocacy and service in the areas I am most interested--voting rights, employment law, administrative law. Q: Why do you believe diversity in the appellate field is so important? A: Simply stated: "Resources Follow Representation." Diversity in the appellate field is important to ensure that all walks of life--from all communities and backgrounds--are represented with equality and equity in the legal system, government, and society. Promoting diversity in the appellate bar is essential to best address complex legal issues in ways that ensure true justice for all, and to create a more equitable legal profession for future generations of lawyers and judges. Q: What's one thing you will take away from your experience in the Mentorship Program? A: From the TAP Mentorship Program, I will take away a more defined and comprehensive understanding of how to succeed in my career in the appellate practice, confidence in my ability to zealously advocate for my clients, and a network of mentors and friends whom I look forward to practicing alongside. Why do I choose to work with academics in trying to improve representation and visibility in the law schools in Scotland? This was a question I was recently asked by a fellow law graduate from my time at university. She, like me, had mixed experiences at university and now reflecting back shared some of those with me. Here is what I recalled whilst we talked: 1. I choose to do the ordinary degree as opposed to honours. Firstly with 2 young children and pressing financial needs, another year was simply not feasible but more importantly I felt I had to get out because I really didn’t fit in. Those around me already seems to have a career path carved out, largely because they had connections in the industry, whilst I felt completely lost. 2. Whilst others socialised and made life long connections with the academics, I didn’t feel I could. There was simply no relatability. This proved to be a huge disadvantage when it came to seeking career guidance, which I only now truly understand the impact of. 3. When I sought guidance about how to better manage my culturally diverse family life against studying commitments, I was met with silence. When I offered solutions I was met with ‘can’t be done’ rhetoric. The best support I got was from the librarians who would ‘watch’ my 4 year daughter and new born son in his car seat as I ran into the ‘reserve’ section of the law library. These are just 3 example of my experiences. Others will have their stories too. The main point is that underlying all of this are the social, financial and cultural barriers those of us from under represented communities face. We struggle to voice them because we don’t see anyone like us willing to listen. 🎉💡Spotlight on Excellence: Robyn Helling – Wits School of Law’s Most Distinguished Graduand for 2023 We are proud to kick off our #WitsWomeninLaw series by celebrating Robyn Helling, the Most Distinguished Graduand for the Bachelor of Laws Degree in 2023. Robyn’s journey at the Wits School of Law is a testament to her passion for justice, dedication to learning, and commitment to making a difference in society. When asked what inspired her to study law at Wits, Robyn shared, “I always knew that I wanted to study at Wits. I loved Debating, English, and History in high school, so Law seemed like the perfect combination of all three. I also wanted to go into a career that would allow me to work with and engage with people, which Law definitely has. Most of all, I've always known that I wanted to explore a career that would enable me to impact society and see justice realised. Law embodies this for me since it shapes every aspect of society.” Robyn’s advice to her fellow law students is clear: “Maximise every opportunity that the Law School (and university life, in general) gives you. There are so many opportunities to learn so much, not only in classes but also by participating in extra-curricular activities and engaging with the people around you.” When it comes to study tips, Robyn offers three valuable pieces of advice: ✔“1. Stay on top of the work as much as you can so that you can work through it bit by bit. It's a lot less overwhelming than trying to get through a huge volume of work in a short time, with the pressure of a deadline approaching. ✔2. Practice as much as you can. Understanding the work in theory can be very different from actually applying it, and the only way to become comfortable with application questions is to practice working through them. ✔3. Remember what you're working towards and why you're doing this. It definitely helps you to keep perspective, especially when things get busy or stressful.” We are honoured to celebrate her achievements and look forward to seeing the incredible impact she will continue to make in the legal world. Until recently, #biglaw has made peace with the student activists among the law students seeking to join their ranks. Since the October 7th attack on the Israelis, and the unveiling of the long simmering Israel-Palestine conflict, student-activisim has reached new heights and new fervor. #biglaw has not turned a blind eye and has, in fact, early on, rescinded job offers and has asked others to leave. Now that law school graduations are upon us, and summer associate classes are starting at #biglaw firms and in the not too distant future, new incoming classes will be starting, #Biglaw will have to confront significantly more active activists and whether they will allow them to actually join their ranks. AND what each firm will do if an associate who has already joined the firm turns out to be an extremely active activist.

This was an interesting read on whether it makes sense to apply to law school right out of college. “If you are considering applying to law school as an undergraduate, here are five questions to consider: Would applying after your senior year strengthen your candidacy? Do you have clear career goals? Are you considering deferring admission? What are the downsides of applying before you’re ready? Is fear driving your decision?” Thoughts? NYLS’s Office of Academic Planning and Career Development provides law students with tailored guidance from their first semester to well beyond graduation. We spoke with a few recent grads to hear more about their careers and share what they've learned with current law students. First up? We spoke with Joe Rochman ’22, a Law Clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, Staff Attorney's Office Tell us about your current role. At the Staff Attorney's Office, I work on pro se appeals. Law clerks typically serve two-year terms and write substantive memos and draft proposed summary orders for panels in areas of law including constitutional law, civil and civil rights law, criminal law, agency law, federal appellate procedure, and habeas corpus. A large portion of my docket is civil rights and criminal post-conviction appeals. Because my work is exclusively appellate work, I do a lot of research, writing, and editing. How was the Office of Academic Planning and Career Development helpful in preparing you to pursue your career? As a public interest student, I worked primarily with Dean Swati Parikh. NYLS is a great community where I also had incredible support from faculty and staff. As a student in the Wilf Impact Center for Public Interest Law, I developed great relationships with my professors (including Professor Molly Manning, who used to be a supervisor in my current office and was incredible), particularly my clinic professors, who were helpful in guiding my career path. The deans at NYLS, especially Dean Anthony Crowell, have also been instrumental in guiding my career. What career advice would you give to current law students? Get out of your comfort zone and try new things. When considering opportunities, think about what skills you will build that will help your future career, but keep an open mind. Also, think about how much you will enjoy your day-to-day as much as the subject area in which you are looking to work in. Embrace your life outside of law school and your future legal career; you will be surprised how much leading a well-rounded life helps you both personally and professionally.
