Principal Data Scientist @ Ontra | Co-Host of the Data Neighbor Podcast

Data science can mean something completely different depending on who you talk to. That’s why the Data Neighbors Podcast is sitting down with data professionals across the field to hear their stories - what data science means to them and how they’ve landed where they are today. From industry to industry, company to company, team to team, and even year to year, data science shifts and evolves. It’s a wide (and sometimes ambiguous) spectrum, but understanding it can go a long way in making you more effective in your role - whether you’re a data professional or someone working alongside one. I’ve got my own opinions on what data science is (and isn’t, for that matter), but my perspective is just one of many. 🎙️ 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐍𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐏𝐨𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲! To me compensation means, “helping others make challenging decisions, on complex topics, at the right time.” This is probably also true of data science (and part of why I look to DS teams as experts to set a bar for my own rigor). But most importantly, I’ve called that phrase. It’s mine. Don’t test me, data scientists.

Subscribed! The only issue with the podcast is that I don't get to see that magnificent mustache on-screen.

It's one of those fields where you do different things in different companies. Some data scientists do lots of BI, others might do lots of engineering (ETL, pipelines...), others might do ML or NLP... Others might do everything within a small team. It's a crazy discipline to get into, always learning new things.
