Transforming Healthcare Quality for All: This week, we took a powerful step forward at the Health Quality Partners Forum in Nairobi, hosted by PharmAccess . Leaders from across East Africa—healthcare providers, policymakers, and innovators—came together with a shared goal: to make quality healthcare accessible and impactful for all. As we push towards Universal Health Coverage #UHC, we’re reminded that access alone is not enough. Quality is the essential foundation of care. Studies reveal that 60% of avoidable deaths result from poor-quality care, while only 40% are due to lack of access. This stark reality drives our mission at #SafeCare: quality saves lives. At SafeCare, we’re empowering healthcare facilities to rise to national and international standards, backed by data-driven insights, technology, and collaboration. By aligning with both public and private sector partners, we’re laying the groundwork for lasting healthcare improvements. A special thank you to PS Ministry of Health, Kenya Ms. Mary Muthoni, for her commitment to sustainable healthcare for all Kenyans, and to Prof. Khama Rogo, whose words were a powerful reminder that healthcare quality must never be an afterthought. A Short Read Mbindyo et al.'s (2013) Unsung Heroes of Kenyan Healthcare (https://lnkd.in/dWxAnFNV) Clinical Officers (COs) are the multitasking wizards of Kenya’s healthcare system, especially in rural areas. They treat patients, manage health centers, and bridge gaps between doctors and nurses, often with the grace of a cat on a hot tin roof. Yet, their roles are as clear as a Nairobi traffic jam—stuck in patient care while their public health potential collects dust. Faith-based hospitals give them a clearer path, but specialists often get demoted to general duties like a sushi chef flipping burgers. It’s time Kenya redefined their roles and showed some love for these healthcare superheroes! Baseline - After 10 years, it's still clear that evidence-based, patient-centered care is the way to achieve holistic care delivery.

Elevating Quality of Care thru Quality Improvement Initiatives in Uganda For two years now, I have devoted myself to elevating the quality of care that patients receive when they come to our health facilities. This is in line with Uganda’s unwavering commitment to improve the quality of healthcare services. With the help of national strategies like the National Quality Improvement Framework & Strategic Plan (NQIF&SP) 2021–2025, healthcare professionals in Uganda can ably implement initiatives that ensure high quality healthcare services to all patients. The NQIF&SP 2021-2025 outlines key thematic areas through which quality of care in health facilities can be elevated. These include; patient centered care, compliance to all health sector standards, patient safety, utilization of data and strengthening health systems and structures. Subsequently, improvement in service delivery provision have been noted. However, this is not to say that there are no challenges to this approach. But with continued and combined efforts from all stakeholders, every Ugandan can be able to enjoy quality and safe healthcare services. #QualityImprovement #PatientSafety #DataAnalysis #WorldHealthWorkersWeek

Charting Progress: Examining Kenya's Journey to Universal Healthcare Through the Lens of the Primary Healthcare Act Delving into the strides toward Universal Healthcare in Kenya, I moderated a dynamic discussion on the Primary Healthcare Act yesterday evening. In collaboration with the Kenya Medical Association and Kenyatta National Hospital. the event drew over 1000 healthcare professionals from diverse cadres. Highlights from the riveting two-hour session: 1. Insights from Mr. Kenneth Omodhi: A seasoned Community Health Practitioner, he shed light on the functions and challenges faced by community health promoters. Key challenges included inconsistencies in schemes of service across counties and a lack of technical expertise in certain disease areas and essential kits. 2. Emphasis by Maureen Kimani (Head of Division of Community Health at the MOH), underscored that Primary Healthcare (PHC) cannot be achieved without a strong focus on community health. 3. Perspectives from Dr. Oda Conny (Head of PHC in Nairobi County), delved into the implementation of PHC in the county, emphasizing the importance of multi-disciplinary teams over individual specialties in achieving PHC. 4. Overview by Salim Hussein (Head of Primary Healthcare at the Ministry of Health), provided insights into the ministry's vision for PHC in the country, the role of the private sector, and the structural aspects envisioned by the PHC Act for nationwide implementation. Strengthening Zambia's Healthcare System: A Collaborative Milestone This February, in Ndola, Zambia, we embarked on a series of workshops aimed at laying the foundation for a Client Registry and Master Patient Index, essential for creating a seamless, efficient healthcare system for Zambia. 🤝 Together with our esteemed partners - Ministry of Health of Zambia, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, SMART Zambia, IHM , and Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia - CIDRZ - we’ve taken a significant step towards enhancing patient information management and care. 💡Highlights: ✅ Deep dive into Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) for improved data exchange. ✅ Strategic planning for an API Gateway to bridge healthcare systems. ✅ Forging ahead with capacity building, focusing on sustainable healthcare solutions. Our time in Ndola showed the power of collaboration in facing healthcare challenges. As we look forward to the next steps, including an exciting hackathon, we remain committed to supporting Zambia's healthcare evolution.
