As a leader, manager, or HR professional how can you make sure that your employees feel safe enough to share their full selves, including neurodivergence, in the workplace? Our research shows that 74% of ND women were concerned about the impact on their careers of disclosing in the workplace. What do you think would be the proportion of your teams that would share that same concern around disclosure? This is just one of the findings from research that discusses the experiences of Neurodivergent Women in the Workplace. I recently partnered with Unida Consulting and Diversita.co.uk to interview over 40 neurodivergent individuals and survey over 100 more with a key focus on the experiences of ND women. The final report is due in the autumn and will provide a unique insight into the experiences of neurodivergent women in the workplace. While neurodiversity is gaining traction, research often overlooks the unique experiences of women. This study addresses that gap, providing crucial insights to help create more inclusive employment experiences. My research on the challenges of women at work has been insightful. As a woman too, I know that one major struggle is finding the right balance between our jobs, ambition, family and passion. There are two types of pressures that contribute to burnout and #stressintheworkplace. The first is external pressure which comes in the form of demanding clients, workdeadlines, and challenging managers; anything that is outside of you and not fully in your control. The second is internally generated, self-induced pressure or non-productive ways we manage our challenging #emotionsatwork. These are the things that are in our control. Women wanting to work is not merely a choice—it's a necessity. Often, we hear statements like, “Oh, she is getting married. Does the guy earn well?” or “It’s okay if she doesn’t work, but make sure the man is excelling in his career.” The implication is that a woman's career is optional, whereas a man’s is mandatory. This mindset needs to change. In the 21st century, we require the support of both men and women not only in the workforce but also at home. The division of labor should be equitable in all spheres. A disheartening read to see a decline in the number of women working in engineering and tech. We've seen an increase in the number of women entering the workforce from education, but fewer are being retained. This highlights just how important it is to prioritise cultivating a truly inclusive environment where everyone is able to thrive. Not only is this just the right thing to do, it makes much more business sense to retain and develop top talent, who grow into your future leaders. I like seeing statistics indicating an improvement in gender balance. I love hearing stories about support & networking groups, mentoring schemes, flexibility around healthcare & parental needs (amongst many many other things).
