If you search yourself on Upwork, this is how your profile will look as a search result. So to get more clicks, you need to optimize these components: ✅ Your Profile Picture Like a passport photo, take a clear and well-lit photo of your face straight-on. Make sure you’re also centered and smiling in the photo. ✅ Your Title Line Give yourself a descriptive title, such as “Website Copywriter” instead of just saying “Copywriter” for example. If you want to start broad, you can highlight your services like I’ve done in the screenshot. But to niche down, make your title line specific by mentioning your services AND industries you serve. Example: “Email Copywriter for Coaches and Course Creators” ✅ Your Skill Keywords Pick 15 *specific* keywords in the Skills section that best reflect your advertised services and industries you serve. Not only will this help your ideal clients find you in search but it’ll also help boost your proposal (without extra connects) when you apply for jobs. ✅ The First Line Of Your Profile Bio Think of this space as an extension of your title line. At a minimum, your title line and bio first line combined should highlight your services, Unique Selling Proposition (USP), and case studies if you have any. – – It becomes especially important to niche down if you decide to boost your profile. Because when you’re getting charged for *clicks* instead of impressions… You want to optimize clicks by making sure it only attracts clients who’d make a great fit for your skills and experience – and REPELS everyone else. I created my Upwork profile centuries ago. Well, that's what it looks like. I was pretty enthusiastic when I started sending proposals. But within a few days, I used up all my connects and had to wait for the next month to get my precious 10 connects and start again. Imagine starting today on Upwork with just 10 connects in your wallet. You won’t be able to apply to a single job :( So, after trying for a couple of months, I got really disappointed and bid farewell to Upwork. Then, in Nov 2022, something changed. I got myself enrolled in a copywriting course. The course was two months long and that's where I learned about the basics of copywriting. The coach encouraged us to create an Upwork profile and taught us ways to write a winning proposal. Just when I was getting ready to start on Upwork once again, I got an invitation on Upwork. Yes, you heard that right. I got an invitation to a job interview without sending a proposal. The job was small; just $5 but it was big for me at that time. I sent a proposal and shared some samples and tada. I got the job. And not just that job. The employer hired me for two more projects and that’s how my Upwork profile got rolling. I have completed 28 jobs so far on Upwork. I have a 100% JSS and I am a Top Rated Freelancer on Upwork. Your efforts will fall short if you invest only in quality and not quantity. A good example is the result of my recent job search on Upwork. About a month ago, my school 'unexpectedly' shut down. So, I decided to maximise this extra time by focusing on LinkedIn, Upwork, and my career in general. In earlier months, I had sent a few sporadic Upwork proposals but I knew the possibility of getting results this way was slim. To increase my chances of success during the 'break', I combined a higher proposal volume with highly targeted cover letters. Out of 45 proposals, I landed 6 interviews and secured 3 well-paying jobs. It might seem easy, but it took an investment of over 400 connects and many hours. This experience has reiterated the fact that consistent effort and strategic improvements will lead to positive outcomes. Don't just increase the numbers or obsess over quality. Do both. --- P.S. Freelance writers who say that cold outreach doesn't work, but rely on Upwork and other job boards. Are you certain that your prospecting strategy works... Have you ever crunched the numbers on the success rate of your applications on Upwork and the like? Writers on LinkedIn constantly complain about how cold outreach doesn't work or how many emails they need to send to get one client. It's easy to notice that cold outreach takes some effort because you can quickly see the numbers in your outreach software. With a glance, you can figure out the number of emails you sent, open rates, response rates, and conversions. But I am guessing very few of you track the number of bids you make on Upwork or the number of comments you make on LinkedIn updates advertising a job. If you did this, you'd probably notice that a much smaller percentage of bids, comments, and applications turn into gigs. I recently posted a LinkedIn update about my quest for a couple of editors, and within a few days, I got around 80 comments and 90 messages from interested writers and editors. I never post writing jobs on LinkedIn because I've noticed the number of writers that apply. However, I felt that far fewer people would apply for something like this because I was looking for editors who specifically edited white papers and case studies. I was wrong. So many people applied, even those who don't qualify. I need to review 170 applications and select 2 people. That means that 1.17% of applicants will get the job. I only mentioned the job on LinkedIn, but many companies will advertise the position on multiple platforms. When you apply for gigs this way, you're competing with far more people. I'm sure if you crunch the numbers and keep track of every listing you applied for, your conversion rate will be far lower than cold outreach. Are you already keeping track of this? Which is more effective for you - cold outreach or applying to job listings? P.S. the lesson I learned from this is to never post job updates on LinkedIn. I made a promise that I will reply to every applicant and I will. But I don't really want to deal with this in the future. Some people were literally begging for the job. Why did I seriously consider building my personal brand? Because of this: Hafsa, please share your LinkedIn profile, Upwork profile isn’t enough. Despite being a top-rated writer on Upwork, whenever I applied for jobs outside Upwork, they asked about my LinkedIn profile. Many times, I was rejected because my LinkedIn profile didn't look credible. That was when I realized that I must work on my LinkedIn profile. I was clueless, but I started using LinkedIn. I started posting random content, such as quotations. No one noticed them because they’re also available on Google. Afterward, I shared client testimonials I used to get on Upwork. People congratulated me, but still no results. I joined LinkedIn with the purpose of acquiring leads. I was disappointed and planned to quit. Then I realized that there would be no leads in the future because: I was sharing content that everyone was ignoring. I was sharing poorly formatted content. I never bothered to build relations. I only wanted leads from LinkedIn. I didn’t want to build a community.  I was posting and ghosting. Soon, I realized that getting leads was only possible by connecting with people. Getting leads was only possible once I stopped committing those blunders. I stopped sharing generic content. I started sharing valuable content. One of my posts went viral. I got only a few more followers. But I started getting leads slowly. Now, I'm on a mission to share my knowledge with my LinkedIn community. P.S. In July alone, I've written over 4 Upwork profile copies. Here are a few common mistakes many make while optimizing profiles: ❌Self-praises ❌Congested lines ❌Overusing emojis ❌Missing bullet points ❌Overly long descriptions ❌Missing a compelling hook ❌Not defining your target audience ❌Copy-pasting content from AI tools ❌Generic words with keyword stuffing ❌Not addressing the client's pain points ❌Not providing solutions to client problems ❌Missing a CTA with a unique and clear offer Many people write their profile copy well but often miss the “formatting” part. How your profile looks matters a lot and can grab your client's attention. I got my first client on Upwork due to my writing and formatting style. I bid on a job to design FB posts. The client viewed my proposal but hired someone else. A few hours later, he reviewed my profile, was impressed by my writing style, and reached out with this message: "Hi Urooj, I’ve looked at your profile and like your writing style. We have approximately 25 pages to write to create web pages that will appear in search results for people who are looking to solve their pool problems." Your profile is your biggest asset. Showcase yourself professionally rather than bragging or self-praising. Proper formatting and clear presentation can make a huge difference. A well-written and optimized profile can help you close big projects without even bidding—I’ve secured 3-4 such projects this way. P.S.
