Is Office Politics Meant to Drain You or Propel You? I just watched an interview by Lynn Ngugi with Trophy Kiprono that got me thinking. They shared some solid advice on being "mjanja" (savvy) in the corporate world—really practical tips on how to thrive at work. Most of it was spot on and could be a real game-changer for anyone looking to navigate office dynamics. But some parts took me back to a rough patch when work felt overwhelming, to the point of struggling to get out of bed. Let’s be real: we spend a huge chunk of our lives at work, and for us to truly live well, we need workplaces that bring out the best in us—not ones that make us calculating and cold. Yes, politics is part of the game, but it doesn’t have to turn us into heartless strategists. Here’s my approach: - Find your sweet spot- Focus on what you’re naturally good at and make it your strength. - Invest in yourself, mercilessly- Every step in personal growth makes you stronger and more fulfilled. - Define success on your terms- Not everyone is meant to climb to the top of the corporate ladder, and that’s okay. We all have a role to play in keeping the wheels of the corporate world turning. Success doesn’t have to look the same for everyone—figure out what matters to you, and work toward that. Sure, there’s a game to play, but we can do it while keeping our kindness, humor, and humanity intact. Let’s work on creating workplaces that are more fun, less toxic, and give us the freedom to show up as our best selves. Those are my humble thoughts.
