I was re-reading the Wade Gery review the other day - around how NHS organisations should lead the transformation of the wider healthcare system, supporting integrated care systems (ICSs) to deliver better citizen health. Recommendation 1: commit to a patient and citizen centred organising principle for future service transformation is very powerful. I was wondering, what are the good examples of NHS service teams that are following this recommendation? See the full review here: https://lnkd.in/dwjyp9UQ

https://lnkd.in/dEGbfbGg Lord Darzi’s “Independent Investigation of the National Health Service in England” report paints a picture that is both deeply concerning and cautiously hopeful. The opening summary, “The National Health Service is in serious trouble,” presents a stark diagnosis. The report outlines a litany of challenges: failed promises, surging waiting lists, critical deficiencies in A&E, cancer, and cardiovascular care, alongside crumbling infrastructure. One particularly alarming statistic is the £3 billion currently being paid out in compensation for care failures, representing 1.7% of the entire NHS budget. The report stresses that one contributing factor to this crisis is “Patient engagement. The patient voice is not loud enough.” It further notes, “Patient satisfaction with services has declined, complaints have risen, and patients feel less empowered to make choices about their care.” The familiar theme of patients’ concerns being ignored or unaddressed echoes throughout past inquiries into care failings. Imagine if compensation payments could be reduced by just 33%—this would free up £1 billion to address the growing shortfall in capital investment. Thankfully, the report not only diagnoses the issues but also offers clear, hopeful remedies. It outlines tangible steps that, with the right focus and priority, could lead to a turnaround. Two recommendations particularly stood out: 1. Re-engage staff and re-empower patients: Despite the challenges and low morale, NHS staff remain passionately committed to improving patient care. Their talents must be harnessed to drive positive change, and empowering patients to take greater control of their care is key. 2. Tilt towards technology: A significant shift toward technology is essential for unlocking productivity, especially for the hundreds of thousands of NHS staff working outside hospitals, who urgently need the benefits of digital systems. EIDO’s globally leading patient information procedure content and digital informed consent solutions directly address both of these remedies. We firmly believe that our solutions not only enhance patient satisfaction but also demonstrably reduce compensation payments. Additionally, other digital solution providers offer complementary tools that align with the recommendations in the report. If these seeds of improvement are given the priority and nurturing they deserve, we are confident the NHS can overcome many of the challenges outlined and create a more efficient, patient-focused system.

World Health Organization’s Global Initiative on Digital Health focuses on developing global standards, best practices, and resources to fast-track digital health system transformation globally. What do countries need to keep in mind as they operationalise their digital health strategies? In a new article published in BMJ #GlobalHealth by #NossalInstitute's Professor Sumit Kane draws on global insights and takes a whole of health system perspective, to outline the logic underpinning a vision for national digital health initiatives to effectively leverage their ‘digital ecosystem’ to achieve health system goals of improved effectiveness, equity, and responsiveness. 6/50...not a winning record for CMMI (tough schedule of course!). https://lnkd.in/eTp4ewC2 Worth highlighting that one of those notables wins was hospital at home...CMMI funded Mt Sinai Medical Ctr in a demonstration project and it resulted in the holy grail of great outcomes for patients https://lnkd.in/ecpS_Pgm AND lower costs https://lnkd.in/eUaGj8Ww As we assess the difficulties of innovating in healthcare delivery and achieving the quintuple aim, this work (and many similar studies) stands as one more strong reason to make permanent the CMS payment model for hospital at home.
