Our blood travels through a circulatory network of arteries, veins and capillaries that is about 100,000 kilometers long. And it goes around thanks to our hearts beating about 100,000 times per day (some interesting symmetry). I won’t speculate how many times “blood actually goes around the body” per day, but what seems clear is that our hearts pump more than 1000 x of our total volume of blood per day. As it circulates through this extensive network, blood is enriched with information from every tissue and organ, information that can inform on our health and disease. 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬- that was the topic of a talk I was invited to present at the 16th Clinical Trials Strategic Summit (#CTSS) in Munich recently. While preparing my presentation, I realized how these new approaches are actually not so new anymore. Interestingly, without even realising, I have been involved in, supported, led, or simply observed many of these innovations, my first encounter being over a decade ago with the I-SPY2 trials (https://lnkd.in/deVR27jg) Innovations like umbrella, basket, telescope, and platform trials seem to be more common than you think, and I have seen many proposals recently by academic collaborative groups for adaptive platforms that allow for adding new drugs under a master protocol.
