"For our brand new apprentices, graduation may seem like a long way off right now (and on the days that include broken equipment, a stuck ATV, or escaped animals, it may feel impossibly far off). But by the end of the season, most apprentices tell us that it went by in a blink, and with the end of the season comes a lot of mixed emotions. Sometimes the feelings creep up slowly over the eight months, and in some cases, it’s not until we gather for graduation that they hit: a sense of achievement at how much everyone has grown, excitement about moving on to next things, and often, a whole lot of uncertainty about what the next thing might be or how to get there. The New Agrarian Program (NAP) does an amazing job of helping new and beginning agrarians get their foot in the door, particularly those who are not from ranching or farming families, but for many apprentices, the question of how to keep moving toward their goals after their apprenticeship brings a lot of unknowns. If our long-term goal is not just to bring new people into agriculture, but to truly support beginning producers on the path to long-term success, the first few years after an apprenticeship might actually be the most critical time for us to provide support." VIDEO: AGRICULTURE apprenticeships and T Levels - Claire W. of Hartpury University and Hartpury College Claire Whitworth is deputy principal of Hartpury College. Hartpury College has 2,000 students and Hartpury University has 2,500 students. Of those, 500 are studying agriculture, whether as apprenticeships or extended diplomas. Hartpury College will be introducing specialist T Levels in agriculture - in either livestock, crops or agricultural engineering - in September 2024. The college is going to include a sandwich year in the livestock T Level, following 100% success in getting students into the industry through its livestock extended diploma. Whether studying for apprenticeships or T Levels, agriculture students at Hartpury have unique access to industry, including Hartpury's own commercial farm. Claire said: "The commercial bit is really important to us at Hartpury, because it means students are learning in that real world environment. It's not simulated, it is a proper commercial environment. Students are milking at 4am and that's exactly what they would do in industry. "Hartpury is a fantastic place to learn, we've got fantastic staff with amazing skillsets. We've invested £50m in our resources over the last 10 years and we continue to invest. With our specialist staff, all that great equipment and the latest technology, it means that students really will stand out from the crowd. "That's ultimately what we want to achieve, ensuring our students really are work-ready, not just for the jobs of today, but for the jobs of the future." Do you know an apprentice who would like to be involved in this campaign? Please email [email protected] marked Apprenticeship 2024.
