"High speed is too expensive!" "Trains are only good if they're faster than planes!" Nonsense! You've probably seen this graph. It says that high speed rail is only competitive on distances under 800 km (500 miles). But it's actually bullshit. My latest for The Autopian features the fine rail research of fellow aerospace engineer Hot Rails. Here's the thing about trains... People always argue that trains have to be faster than airlines, otherwise "nobody" will use them. It's not the case. Even a very slow train can still get passenger share. The Borealis service pictured takes over 7 hours to get from Chicago to Minneapolis/St Paul. The plane takes an hour. But people don't like airports, and the train is easy. 600 people a day choose the train over a plane. Prior to this service, maybe 2100 people flew daily. It sounds crazy, but people do it. With a single daily service each way, the train snags significant market share. Even though it doesn't top 60 mph! Yes, high speed rail is only faster than air for distances less than 800 km (500 mi). But it doesn't HAVE to be faster to be worthwhile! People will gladly take a slightly longer travel time to avoid airport hell. Even accounting for total door to door time. 2025's "Railway 200" celebration of the anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway provides great opportunities for those involved with tourism and history generally as well as those more directly involved in the operational and heritage railway sectors.
