Sensum Group’s Post

Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) is reshaping housing delivery, offering faster build times, greater certainty, higher quality, ability to drive better value for money, whilst providing a more sustainable approach to construction. In this final part of this Sensum Minds Housing Series, we explore how MMC is influencing the future of housing, the lessons learned from Sensum projects, and the evolving role of traditional construction in an integrated prefabricated world. Earlier this year, Sensum and QBuild conducted a series of collaborative design sprint workshops to develop a guideline on using MMC for low-rise housing in Queensland. The associated report mentioned in this post provides advice for stakeholders on how to start improving construction productivity on multi level housing projects in their pipeline. I was invited to participate in these workshops as a Subject Matter Expert with other industry experts. It is worth noting that these sprints highlighted one of the most effective approaches to designing multi-level buildings for MMC – that is, to have continual compliance review of each discipline throughout the design process and into construction. This systemised approach of adopting DfMA relies upon continual compliance checks to ensure that documenting the design, manufacture and assembly of building components will lead to improved quality, longevity and sustainability. Ultimately, these improvements will achieve an increase in public confidence of using offsite construction over traditional construction. Multi-storey MMC is the future of housing.
