Seventeen years ago, my dad and his friends decided to take a leap on an idea and create a hobby games convention that would be welcoming for all ages, from families to enthusiasts in the UK, and the UK Games Expo was born.  Last weekend saw a record-breaking attendance of 39k unique visitors and over 65k total attendance over the three days 🎉 It's unlike any other event I've ever been to, and the experience for visitors and volunteers doesn't end when the trade halls close for the day. In the evening, the Hilton Hotel becomes the hub for a street food dinner, open gaming space to meet and play games with old or new friends and even the option to watch an entertainment show. Since the age of 12, I've learnt firsthand what it takes to build not only a loyal community but one that is extremely passionate about the brand. I love seeing the event come to life each year, speaking to new and returning visitors and hearing how much they love attending and the pure joy they get from it. Here is what I've learned from the team at the UK Games Expo: ⬇ 🎲 Never lose sight of your community. Without them your business wouldn't exist, so always be ready to listen and take feedback onboard. You will only grow if you deliver what they want. 🎲 Bring people on board who are all deeply passionate about your brand's mission. They will help take your business to the next level. 🎲 If you want to start a business, being a customer in that industry first will give you an advantage, as you can spot the gaps in the market that others will oversee and help you create a USP. Students sometimes ask me what it's like to publish a tabletop game. This is one of the main things it involves, once you've actually designed the game. You travel around to different tabletop events (like GAMA, below) and demo your game for other people, so they will considering buying it and sharing it with their friends. This has an exponential, network effect, if you do it right and your game finds an audience. Even big companies like Ravensburger have to do this. Other forms of marketing are important too, but often it's you -- or your team -- showing off games to potential players, one small group at a time.
