The mutual exchange of knowledge between Indigenous Peoples enriches communities, aiding in cultural preservation and sustainable development. The communities of Neyashiinigmiing (Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation) and Poroma in Bolivia had the chance to meet in person in Neyashiinigmiing for an Indigenous knowledge exchange where, bound by both commonalities and challenges, they were united in their determination of Indigenous solidarity, food security, and resilience. Today, for International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we honour Indigenous knowledge transmission and support the facilitation of these exchanges as a means of cultural healing, partnership strengthening, and mutual learning. 🧡 I am sharing this, outside of my regular leadership content, to make you think and maybe take action 🧡 Today, Sept 30th, is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. Also known as Orange Shirt Day. ❓ What is Truth and Reconciliation? It is the result of inquests, research, listening, acknowledgement and now some action after generations of cultural genocide in Canada. This day is for Canadians to remember and honour the Indigenous children and families who endured the dark legacy of residential schools in Canada. These so-called schools' sole purpose was to whitewash the Indigenous people and eliminate all traces of their culture. For over 100 yrs, the government ripped children from their families, abused, tortured, and murdered them, destroying their identities, beliefs, language, and culture, leaving lasting wounds that continue to affect generations. This isn't ancient history; the last one only closed in 1996. For generations, what was being done to these children was ignored or, worse, denied and hidden. ❓ Why Orange Shirt Day? The orange shirt represents Phyllis Webstad's story. At just 6 years old, she was forced to go to a residential school, where she had her beloved orange shirt taken from her, the first step in trying to eliminate her Indigenous identity. ❓ Why am I sharing this? Whilst I now live in the UK, I am also Canadian. Canada's history and its truths need to be spoken about, and its lessons shared worldwide. In Canada, work is being done to learn, with the start of actions being taken to reconcile. BUT, this history is only mentioned in Canada, and that needs to change! My children have been educated in Canada, Australia, and the UK. Considering the UK is the main colonial perpetrator, it’s unconscionable that this history (which is still happening in some places) across the commonwealth isn’t part of the UK curriculum and dialogue. There is little acknowledgement if any, of the part the UK played and much less accountability. I mean, our daughter was told off in Year 8 when she challenged the very white-washed "saviour" retelling of how Canada was "founded" by her English teacher. I know that Canada is nowhere near perfect, but I hope that the work started there to acknowledge this genocide; these horrific colonial injustices can also begin to be a lesson to those outside of Canada. 🌍 We need to acknowledge and then take action concerning active genocide happening in various places. These horrors are being excused or ignored by the rest of the world. 📚 Please educate yourself about Canada's history and its effects. Share with those around you and demand change for all such injustices. Please ask if you want book recs. To honour today, I ask you to remember that every child deserves to grow up in a world free from discrimination and prejudice due to their own culture. Attached is a short but powerful video from one of Canada's esteemed Chiefs. #EveryChildMatters #OrangeShirtDay

Today, on National Truth and Reconciliation Day, we reflect on the anguish, pain, and suffering of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples through Canada’s residential school system. This day is symbolic and is not just a time for remembrance but also a call to action. It reminds us to actively participate in the journey toward reconciliation—not just today, but every day. Let's amplify the stories that have long been silenced, support Indigenous-led businesses, and commit to the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. https://lnkd.in/emKngeFF

🧡🧡🧡 Today, on National Truth & Reconciliation Day, we pause to reflect on the profound impact of the residential school system on Indigenous communities across Canada. This day, also known as Orange Shirt Day, is a time to honor the survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and acknowledge the enduring strength of Indigenous cultures. Indigenous culture is rich with traditions, languages, and wisdom that have been passed down through generations. From the intricate beadwork of the Métis to the powerful storytelling of the First Nations and the deep connection to the land held by the Inuit, these cultural practices are a testament to resilience and identity. Their inherent stewardship is so important to foster and adopt in our everyday living now more than ever. As we commemorate this day, let us commit to learning more about Indigenous histories, culture and philosophy of living in harmony with Nature. By doing so, we not only honor the past but also contribute to a future rooted in respect, understanding, and reconciliation. Together, we can build a Canada that truly values and celebrates the diversity and richness of Her Indigenous cultures. Let's do better. Let's be better. Our children are depending upon it. #TruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousCulture #OrangeShirtDay #EveryChildMatters Photo Credit: Innovating Canada

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the CMA as part of a coalition of national and provincial heritage organizations urges the Government of Canada to take immediate, decisive action to establish an Indigenous-led National Framework for Indigenous Cultural Heritage Rights. We do this to support the return of Indigenous ancestors and belongings through repatriation and to protect the rights of Indigenous peoples to their own cultural heritage. We urge the Government of Canada to: • Fulfill Canada’s commitments enshrined in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (UNDRIP). • Take urgent action. Despite Canada's commitment to UNDRIP, Action Plan Measure 98, which commits to co-developing a comprehensive approach for the repatriation of Indigenous Ancestors and Cultural Belongings, has not yet been started. • Address the full spectrum of Indigenous cultural heritage rights through an Indigenous-led National Framework for Indigenous Cultural Heritage Rights. • Release the funds requested in our pre-budget submissions to the Department of Finance, and the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance for initial research on repatriation scope and costs. It's time for meaningful progress on Canada's UNDRIP obligations. Read the full joint statement: https://bit.ly/3BuRm7X
