Why is SAP Security So Complex?
Based on our SAP Security customer survey, we understand that SAP security is complex for several reasons, with one of them being the system landscape:
- SAP landscape includes numerous system lines (on average 10), each serving different business functions;
- Each system line typically consists of 3-4 environments (e.g., Development, Testing, Production)
- Numerous Clients: Within each environment, there are 3-4 clients (e.g., 000, 001, 100, 200), each assigned to specific tasks.
The SAP Security baseline is composed of approximately 250 controls, and this is still not exhaustive. Most organization have around 200 controls that apply to each client. Each control, on average, consists of 5 checkpoints, making the process even more detailed, error-prone and time-consuming. With so many control checkpoints, a control weakness could arise anywhere.
Given this complexity, it's impressive that organizations can manually assess their security and ensure compliance.... The numerous controls and checkpoints require significant effort. In my opinion, it is clear that automated solutions and expert oversight are necessary to maintain strong security in SAP environments.
