PCI DSS v4.0 3.4.1 PAN is masked when displayed (the BIN and last four digits are the maximum number of digits to be displayed), such that only personnel with a legitimate business need can see more than the BIN and last four digits of the PAN. This requirement focuses on the need for masking the Primary Account Number(PAN) when it is being displayed. PAN must be masked to show a limited portion.  PAN must be masked in the way that only the Bank Identification Number(BIN) and the last 4 digits can be displayed.  In order for a person to see more than the BIN and the last 4 digits of the PAN, they must have a business justification. Masking protects  the PAN in the event of unauthorized access to the screen or printout, only the limited numbers are shown, minimizing the risk of unintended disclosure of the full PAN through the human error through emails, reports for instance. This requirement emphasizes the importance of access control which always be based on the principle of Least Privilege.
