Today marks 💯 years of existence of the Singapore-Malaysia link causeway. A link that benefits both countries economically and socially. During COVID, when borders were abruptly closed in 2020 by then temporary PM of Malaysia, this posed a massive interruption to the lives of many. Economic trade, job loss and family relations were severely impacted with the outbreak and closure of borders. I remember some couldn’t even bid farewell to lost loved ones for people who work across the causeway. It was during this time that made me reflect how we should all appreciate simple things like connectivity. Connectivity is just like integration. Work-life integration for example or even integration between systems to people for that matter. With great integration, comes great connectivity. We seem to take for granted the beauty of connectivity in a fast-paced life when things are semi-automated. But, imagine a world where information can flow automatically without you lifting a finger, a world where AI can improve how you conduct and expand your businesses without taking too much time and effort. At the moment, QR codes have been implemented at Singapore immigration checkpoints to speed up the checks. Looking forward to more digital transformation at the immigration checkpoints. How life changing that would be?

How to build a case with Impact (and Love) 💚🤝 At Cents we are strongly driven by the willingness to empower communities to contribute meaningfully to environmental and social Causes. To do this, it is crucial that companies take an approach geared towards generating impact over time. In this sense, Greenweez Italia is proving to be a key partner, both in terms of vision and commitment which Celine Dumas and Francesca Rollo push further everyday. After the extraordinary success of the pilot project - where we collected 1,670 contributions in favour of Fondo Forestale Italiano - our synergy continues to strengthen, this time in support of The Black Bag, a company focused on beach cleaning and environmental education, one of the first to join our network. Our innovative software solution facilitates this process by allowing responsible customers to donate 1€ per order, directly aiding The Black Bag's efforts in preserving beaches and marine biodiversity. This partnership ensures that every contribution, no matter how small, has a significant impact on our environment. This initiative is especially meaningful to me due to the personal bond with Andrea Canepa, founder of The Black Bag. Andrea believed in the potential of Cents from the beginning. His dedication to environmental preservation and his visionary leadership have been truly inspiring, both for me and Alessio Mazzalupi. Over the years, we have succeeded in giving visibility to their Cause, making The Black Bag today one of the local organisations that has raised the most through our solution. Our work together reaffirms my belief that, through lasting collaboration, true change can be driven. This is because what underpins change is first and foremost the love for a Cause, the tireless desire to do the best for others and to leave the world a little better than how it was when we arrived, an element that can never be lacking.

I love the photo we chose for the front of Manitoba Council for International Cooperation's 50th annual report. I am sure that 50 years ago a photo celebrating menstruation would not have been highlighted on the front of a report. It is wonderful to see a girl reading the book "Celebrate Your Body" and learning about growing up great. I started menstruating about 50 years ago, and I know it was not discussed openly then. We would discreetly hid our pads when going to the washroom to change them. It is great that there has been progress in this area over the years. Manitoba Council for International Cooperation on behalf of the Inter-Council Network / Réseau de coordination des conseils has been managing the Fund for Innovation and Transformation - Fonds pour l'innovation et la transformation with support from Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada to test innovative solutions to advance gender equality. Girls of Tomorrow Foundation with local partner St. Jude Family Projects tested an innovative Female-Centered Permaculture Garden solution to combat menstrual stigma in rural Uganda. The photo is from their project. They had great results: • Menstrual stigma was reduced significantly in schools. At baseline, 82% of girls reported experiencing menstrual stigma in school which decreased to just 20% at endline. • There was a decrease in school absenteeism with 66% of girls reporting missing school because of their period at baseline and only 18% at endline. • Parents reported providing more emotional support by endline increasing rates from 34% to 63% for mothers and 66% to 77% for fathers. • There was a 25% increase of female student leaders around the issue of menstrual health and hygiene in their schools by endline. • The percentage of girls experiencing bullying related to menstruation dropped from 20% to just 0.8% by endline. The Next Generation of Ocean Leaders Need Hope 💌: Emma's Story Meet Emma, an Ocean Wise Youth alum who fell in love with the ocean at age three. It was a face-to-face encounter with a Beluga whale that left her in complete awe. From that instant, the ocean became her lifelong fascination, and she devoured everything she could about it. As her knowledge grew – so did her concern for the threats it faced. When Emma was 6, she remembers wondering “will I still see whales" when I grow up? Enter our Youth to Sea Program – a turning point in Emma’s life: “This was easily the best decision I’ve ever made.” Through experiential learning journeys, she witnessed firsthand what ocean conservation truly means. Thanks to generous supporters, Emma was able to create workshops for fourth-grade students, educating them about the threats facing orca whales, and she was able to start the O.R.C.A. Festival, a youth-led, sustainability market. Investing in young people has an amazing ripple effect. Happy Earth Day! 🌍 On Friday, we headed to King’s Cross for Earthfest 2024. There was a lot of exciting stuff to see, including art, fashion, live music, and inspiring talks about how we can come together to drive change. And Caitlin Rozario, our very own Head of Brand and Culture, hosted two great sessions. First up, she interviewed Beccy Speight, the CEO of the RSPB. Beccy talked about the projects they are working on right now to reverse the damage that’s been done to nature and wildlife in the UK. She also spoke about how companies can get involved with saving our wildlife, by donating, volunteering and spreading awareness. Our biggest takeaway was that there’s so much nature right under our noses, so we can get started with the spaces closest to us – whether that’s our own garden or a local park. Caitlin also hosted a panel discussion on eco-friendly employee benefits, with Jamie Richards (Forest), Emilie Stephenson (innocent drinks) and Sarah Howden (Possible). For philanthropic funders and investors interested in the nature-climate space, there is going to be a great online event tomorrow put on by Conservation X Labs with some legends in the space -- Amy Rosenthal from Planet and Tom Quigley from Superorganism (and myself) -- covering the role of science in asset allocation. It's a closed event, but please reach out on DM for an invite. With the emergence of natural capital and nature frameworks for business such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures, the Natural Capital Protocol, and Science Based Targets for Nature, the need to identify actionable, impactful, and investable solutions for nature is clear. Bringing biodiversity to the forefront of investability and innovation can help match the speed and scale required to tackle the global biodiversity crisis and help protect the planet. Yet, a myriad of metrics, indicators, targets, and goals can make it difficult to prioritize across foundations, VCs, NGOs, and governments.
