So, what does a job in tech look like? It certainly is not only sitting behind a screen and coding! Last night I join WWCode (Edinburgh chapter) for a interesting evening finding out about alternative careers in tech. The fireside-style chat definitely highlighted the range of possibilities, with the speakers ranging from... 🖋 Technical authoring 📲 Product management 🤳 UI & UX Product designer 🎯 Talent acquisition & employee experience What was apparent is that many jobs in tech don't rely on a degree in software, data or cyber security. There are also... 🗣 Blah Blah jobs and 💻 Tick Tick jobs Who knew?! There was a definite experience of women being in the minority, but in general it was recognised that self belief was a key part to improving the overall wellbeing of women in the sector. The other day, I came across Yasmin's post about women and entrepreneurship, posing the question: Why aren’t there more women entrepreneurs? And it got me thinking.. From day one, we've been striving to make our company gender balanced —not because it sounds good or looks nice in team photos, but because we truly believe different perspectives drive better ideas. And guess what? We're still mostly interviewing men (shocking). I’ve heard the usual reasons. But I don’t buy it. The issue isn’t talent—it’s opportunity and representation. So help me here! Are you a backend developer who’s ready to bring the fire, learn, and make an impact every day? We don’t care about fancy titles and degrees. Yalla, let’s chat. 🫶 Celebrating Women Techmakers Month 🫶 🗣 “Not Smart Enough” “Imposter Syndrome” “Diversity Quota” “You don’t belong here” These are some phrases almost every woman in tech has either heard or thought of at least once in their professional journey. ✨ Sometimes, it’s subtle: being assigned frontend design or PowerPoint presentations instead of backend coding at a hackathon. Other times, it’s more direct, like when faculty or seniors address your male teammates, even though you’re the one who came up with the idea—or you’re just as capable of answering the questions. (These are real experiences I’ve faced.) Developers, competitive programmers, backend coders, frontend coders, creators - none of these roles come with a gender assigned to them. Women in STEM, all of you belong here. Women have historically played a pivotal role in the world as we know it today, and there is space in tech for everyone. 👩💻 👩🚀👩🔬👩💼👷♀️ A small way I remind myself of this is through my linkedin header, by Women Techmakers.
