As a product manager, you are likely obsessed with measuring everything. One of the key types of metrics that are vital for any product is acquisition metrics. What are Acquisition metrics? In business speak, acquisition metrics provide invaluable insights into the effectiveness of marketing, advertising, and sales campaigns. In plain talk, acquisition metrics tell you how many people are interested in your product, how many of those you can convince to try your product, and how many of those actually stick around after the trial. Acquisition metrics also help you understand where your potential customers are coming from. Is your marketing campaign working out? Is your advertising budget too small? There are several acquisition metrics you can measure. I call it the Acquisition Metrics Suite. They are: - Conversion Rate - Bounce Rate - Landing Page Conversion Rate - Customer Acquisition Cost - Channel Effectiveness - Traffic Source Distribution - Customer Lifetime Value - Church Rate - Average Order Value - Order Frequency - Click-through rate - Lead Generate Rate - Time to Conversion Rate - Demo Signups - Demo to Full Account Conversion Rate - Revenue Per Channel As you can tell, there are a lot of metrics. Which metrics are the most important for your business? It depends on the type of product you have. B2B products differ from B2C products, which changes the importance of some metrics. Whether your product is a one-off thing or a subscription service makes a difference in which metrics will be important to track. However, no matter what type of product you sell, the three metrics that are important to pay attention to are Conversion Rate, Customer Acquisition Cost and Customer Lifetime Value. ➡️ Conversion Rate Let’s say you get 100 people to click your ad. Of those 100 clicks, ten people bought what you were selling. This means that 10% of visitors bought (converted) your product. That is your conversion rate. ⚠️ Note: A conversion happens when a prospect takes an action. Here’s the formula: Conversion Rate = Number of Conversions / Number of Visitors ➡️ CAC - Customer Acquisition Cost This metric answers the question of how much it costs to bring in a new customer. If you have spent $100 on advertising in September and you have gained two new customers, your CAC is $50. It costs you $50 to acquire a new customer. Here’s the formula: CAC = (Sales Costs + Marketing Costs) / Number of Customers ➡️ LTV or CLTV - Customer Lifetime Value After you have acquired the customer, the next question you want to know is how much revenue you should expect to generate from that customer. The higher the expected revenue from your customers, the more money you can spend on advertising and marketing to get new customers.
