I’ve been asked a lot lately: why do I keep coming back to pre-sales and sales engineering? It’s made me reflect. For me, it goes all the way back to childhood. I used to explain tech to my family—always excited to show them how things worked. That drive to teach comes from my mother, a teacher. I’ve done many roles — developer, sales, consulting, marketing, events Developer was the longest stretch, fun but it felt too insular. I wasn’t able to share the tech with others. When I believe in a piece of tech, I want others to believe in it, too. That’s what makes pre-sales and sales engineering so rewarding. It’s about helping others see how technology can solve their problems. Anyone else get asked this question about the roles they keep returning to?

In this series of five posts, I'll explore how five key educational skills align with the requirements of a solution consultant. Today I’ll be discussing the third skill of this series: 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦-𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Both roles require the ability to identify and solve problems. As an educator, I've faced challenges like student behavior issues, curriculum gaps, or limited resources. I’ve developed strategies to address these problems and improve learning outcomes. In a solution consultant role, I'll be expected to solve client challenges by recommending appropriate solutions and overcoming obstacles. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞: Problem-solving and critical thinking skills are essential for success in a solution consultant role. It was great to be on campus this morning! There is something so energetic about being on a college campus. I had the privilege of being a guest speaker in a sales class at Johnson & Wales University. Had a blast having a conversation about my career progression, solution engineering, CRM, and a some AI.
