Congratulations to SEA-LNG members Shell and ZIM Integrated Shipping Services on the first bunkering operation of the ZIM Mount Vinson! 👏 The company used the Progress bunker vessel to deliver to ZIM’s 15,000 TEU boxship at the Port of Savannah last week. The ship subsequently bunkered the CMA CGM Symi this week. The bunker vessel – the largest Jones Act LNG bunker barge – was delivered earlier this month. The supply infrastructure to support LNG as a marine fuel continues to grow. It can now be delivered to vessels in some 185 ports, including most of the main bunkering ports, with a further 50 ports in the process of facilitating LNG bunkering investments and operations by 2025. LNG bunkering infrastructure can be used to supply net-zero emissions fuels in the form of liquefied biomethane or liquefied e-methane, with little or no modification, enabling the transition to a decarbonised shipping industry. 📢 Another industry-first! We have completed the first-ever LNG bunkering operation by ship in the port of Cuxhaven. Our bunker vessel ‘Optimus’ swiftly, safely and successfully delivered LNG to the dredger ‘Vox Ariane,’ operated by long-term client Van Oord. Our ship-to-ship bunkering in Cuxhaven represents a pioneering step in the region's LNG infrastructure development, as the port had previously only seen LNG operations conducted via truck and currently only permits LNG bunkering at one berth. LNG infrastructure development is part of a broader trend, with more ports across Germany adopting LNG operations to support shipping’s clean fuels transition. Improved LNG bunkering capabilities in Cuxhaven, a Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG port, also open up the pathway to maritime decarbonisation via liquified biomethane (LBM) and then renewable e-methane going forwards. Some 251 newbuild carriers are due to be delivered in 2025-27, according to data from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). But loading demand from 124mn t/yr of new liquefaction capacity over the same period may only require 171 additional carriers. ➡️ 🚢 LNG fleet growth outpaces bunkering vessel expansion The LNG shipping industry faces mounting challenges as the gap between dual-fuel LNG-capable vessels and LNG bunkering vessels continues to widen, raising concerns over the sector’s ability to meet the growing demand for fuel infrastructure. Trelleborg Marine & Infrastructure managing director Dave Pendleton discussed this critical issue during the opening day of the LNG Shipping and Terminals Conference in London.
