An important realization I had early on in my career was the difference between Executors and Leadership (or as I call it, the Learned Intuition group). Often business strategy comes the Learned Intuition group, usually from a principled, learned perspective and sometimes jolted through intuition. Executors constrain and build. One great thing about being an Executor is you necessarily can occupy the Learned Intuition circle, but often not the other way around. The tech industry definitely under indexes on Executors.

Winston Churchill once said: “ Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts”. Most managers (including me) either get stuck with the past wins or get disappointed with the failures. As leaders, we often face challenges that test our resolve and determination. Churchill’s words remind us that leadership is not about achieving a single victory or being deterred by setbacks, but rather continuing through difficulties with courage. Here’s how to keep your courage: - Success is not final: Your past achievements don’t guarantee your future success. Remain humble, and agile, and always aim for continuous improvement. - Failure is not fatal: Effective leaders take failures as learning opportunities. They encourage a culture where calculated risks are taken, and mistakes are seen as stepping stones to growth. - Courage to continue: This is the cornerstone of resilient leadership (your North Start if you want). It’s about maintaining your composure while under pressure. Inspiring others during the uncertainty and keep pushing forward when the path doesn’t look smooth. As you navigate your own challenges, remember Churchill’s wisdom. Have your portion of courage to move forward, while inspiring others along the way. ---- PS. I see too many leaders mistake plans for strategy. And it’s costing them the next level of sustained growth, innovation, and success. A plan includes: - Tactics - Actions - Short-term activities - A present-forward mindset A strategy includes: - Visions - Destinations - Long-term focus - A future-backward mindset (and don’t let the term ‘strategic plan’ fool you, it’s still just a plan) In order to activate strategy, you build plans. If the strategy is to run an efficient race and come in first place, the plan includes the approach to jumping each hurdle. People think focusing on strategy means sacrificing immediate results and that hasn’t been my experience. When strategy is executed well, sustained intentional results result.
