I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max and I see no reason to upgrade my smartphone since these smartphone hardware devices are incredibly disappointing in terms of helping me be productive (tho they make fan static social media gimmick videos). Of course, as tech physicians with visually impairment, JR Rizzo and I are at the forefront of LLM / VLM innovation. The future is verbal! I have some questions and would love to get your inputs. Apple has Best In Class spatial computer that must (my assumption) be using a lot of AI models. These models must be providing inferences to merge sensor data with immersive AR realm. So spatial computer must be using a highly efficient (fast and energy efficient) inferencing engine. Plus the models that Spatial Computer uses must be trained on some AI platform. Apple does not seem to be a big Nvidia customer. Who do you think supplies AI hardware to apple.? I think spatial computing platform of apple is the most advanced Consumer AI device that exist. I have read that there are enormous synergies that exist between Nvidia's omniverse and Apple's Spatial computing device. Arm boosts on-device AI with flagship GPUs: Arm unveiled a trio of flagship GPU chipsets designed to boost gaming experience on consumer devices including smartphones and XR wearables, highlighting capabilities designed to improve visuals and AI-based applications for mobile. In a blog, Anand Patel, senior director GPU product management, client line of business at Arm explained the new chipsets are based on its fifth-generation GPU architecture it launched alongside a roster of processors in 2023. The new chips feature the Immortalis-G925 GPU, Mali-G725 GPU and Mali-G625 GPU, all of which were created to enable “immersive visual experiences as part of the ongoing mobile gaming evolution” and accelerate “AI-based experiences across leading applications”. Arm pitched the Immortalis-G925 as its highest-performing processor yet, claiming it delivers 37 per cent better performance in supporting gaming experience over the first-generation Immortalis-G720. The new flagship also apparently consumes 30 per cent less power, and is designed to support graphically-demanding gaming content. Further, the system “offers acceleration capabilities for various AI use cases” including image classification, natural language processing and speech-to-text. Patel explained Arm has increased support for hardware interfaces for the Immortalis-G925, making it suitable for “high-performance consumer technology markets like flagship smartphones”. Meanwhile, it attempts to target premium mobile handsets with Mali-G725 and “smartwatches and entry-level mobile devices” with Mali-G625. “We are targeting a broad spectrum of consumer devices across different tiers, from flagship to entry-level, where we are seeing ever-increasing consumer and partner demands for more immersive mobile gaming and AI-based experiences,” Patel said. The executive added Arm is also working with Epic Games, Google and MediaTek to improve various aspects of the mobile gaming ecosystem, including graphics rendering and battery consumption. Apple and the missing Generative AI Play… Apple has been a sleeping giant when it comes to Generative AI. In fact in most past product announcements they showcased AI features without mentioning the word AI. But no longer. With Samsung going all in AI with S24 Ultra, and Google likely to follow suit with new Pixel, it does not take a lot to figure out iOS 18 will have some strong Gen AI features. Tim Cook has now stated that Generative AI features are coming “later this year”. But in classic Apple fashion he preferred to keep it a surprise. The thing is - The Apple Silicon runs inference really fast. With enough RAM (64GB or more) you can actually run LLMs faster on the Apple silicon than on most windows desktops than with the best RTX card you can buy right now - the RTX 4090 (of course I am not talking about the commercial cards like H100, which is not the right comparison). Since the phone share most of that Silicon, it’s safe to assume the iPhones will have an edge in inference. What could it be? Apple has already given the first hint by dropping the MGIE, an open source image editor using Generative AI. You could make some really easy imaging edits by typing what you want in plain text.
