'Bad strategy won't survive contact with reality'. Currently developing the strategy for a client engagement and I like having first principles to keep me honest. I love 'Good Strategy Bad Strategy' by Richard Rumelt for this. Good strategy honestly and courageously names the true problem we face. Then diagnoses it. Then finds the root cause. Then figures out how to turn that weakness into a strength. And finally has a plan to bring this to life. Bad strategy avoids naming the real problems and floats free of analysis or choice. It doesn't mean anything in reality. Richard's summary helps keep me honest, sharing in case it's of use for you too. Have you tried it? Have you had a strategy genuinely help you to radically focus your work? This is something that is true of any business, but a good strategy means nothing without having a great culture to execute it.
