Sabena technics has completed the acquisition of Action Air Environment, which specializes in intelligence and surveillance technologies.  On the date of the finalization of this acquisition, Action Air Environment will be renamed Sabena Technics ISR. Building on its position as a key player in the civil and military aeronautical services sector, the group is continuing its strategic diversification through this acquisition, particularly for the benefit of the sovereign sector. Airbus Defense and Space has won a substantial $2.5 billion contract from the German military for the SATCOMBw 3 next-generation communications satellites. This deal consists of the development and deployment of two advanced geostationary satellites, as well as upgrades to the ground segment, launch services, and operational support for 15 years. These satellites are expected to offer increased bandwidth, improved security, and enhanced resilience, marking a significant upgrade from the aging SATCOMBw 2 system.

Bridging current and future technologies is essential for defence and international stability. This is the aim of the Eurofighter programme., the most important industrial collaboration project in aeronautics, which involves four nations (Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain) and three partner companies (Leonardo, Airbus Defence and Space and BAE Systems). In the current scenario, characterised by increasing instability and the constant development of new technologies, the Eurofighter Typhoon has consolidated itself over the years as a fundamental European security asset, becoming the true backbone of air defence. The goal of the programme – in which Leonardo participates with a 21% share, rising to 36% if considering the construction of the aircraft airframe, avionics and on-board electronics – is to develop new elements to make the Typhoon an aircraft capable of handling highly complex missions. A bridge between current and future technologies, but also a system capable of operating in a multi-domain ecosystem, interacting with elements ranging from the physical operational scenario to the cyber and electronic world. ✈️ Getting ready for the 1st validation exercise of MITRANO, a project designed to manage better mission trajectories and collaborative decision-making at network level and in ATC operations, including advanced design principles for military access to airspace. 👉 MITRANO is a SESAR Joint Undertaking project led by EUROCONTROL, and last week's meeting for Solution 1, which took place at #EIH the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub 💡 on 8 and 9 October, aimed to prepare the first validation exercise (planned for November 2024) regarding the integration of shared military ATM data within the collaborative traffic flow & capacity management processes. Our partner organisations 🤝 for this validation include AIRBUS, PANSA, ROMATSA, INTEGRA, NATS, and military airspace users from France, Germany & Spain. Europe's armed forces operate more than 150K flights per year. Accommodating them may mean closing airspace, sometimes at short notice, to civil traffic. Given growing air traffic demand & complexity, new operational & technical solutions that allow more flexible civil-military cooperation like SESAR3 project MITRANO are thus vital to maximise the use of airspace. The Belgian government today approved its observer status in the Next Generation Weapon System/Future Combat Air System (NGWS/FCAS) programme, following the results of the consultation with France, Germany and Spain. This is a clear and decisive step forward for the programme, demonstrating the importance of developing a system of systems that goes beyond the development of the future European combat aircraft: #FCAS will be the most important European defence programme for decades to come. In this sense, the Belgian government has also approved the launch in 2024 of a specific research and development programme worth €60 million to optimise the position of the Belgian industrial and technological base in terms of cooperation opportunities. The NGWS/FCAS has the potential to be a double game changer, both for a more coherent and integrated European defence policy and for a stronger and more consolidated European defence industry. Since the signature of the concept study in 2019 and the signatures of the framework contracts in 2020 and 2022 (each focusing on research and development), substantial progress has been achieved. The successful completion of the Concept Selection Review for the Next Generation Fighter together with France, Germany and Spain showcases the credible advancement (heading for a first flight of the demonstrator in 2029).
