Type 95 Depth Charge: Japan's WWII Anti-Submarine Weapon The Type 95 depth charge was a key anti-submarine weapon used by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. Developed in the mid-1930s, it featured a cylindrical design, measuring about 600 mm in length and 350 mm in diameter, and weighed approximately 150 kg, with 100 kg of TNT or a similar explosive. Operation It operated using a hydrostatic pressure principle, where a depth-setting mechanism allowed for precise detonation depths. As the charge sank, increasing water pressure triggered a diaphragm, which set off the explosive at the predetermined depth. Deployment The Type 95 could be deployed from ships, aircraft, and coastal installations. Ships used racks and launchers to deploy multiple charges, creating patterns to maximize damage to enemy submarines. Effectiveness and Limitations While effective, the Type 95's success depended on accurate depth settings and submarine detection. Advances in submarine technology, like stronger hulls and deeper diving, gradually reduced its effectiveness, leading to ongoing improvements in anti-submarine weaponry. The essay looks at events in the Red and Black Seas to test its argument. These theatres capture the wider security-warfare continuum, and offer remarkable parallels in how Ukrainian forces are challenging the Russian Navy in the latter, and the Houthi forces are pressuring the multi-national naval task forces in the former. Both conflicts showcase the use of low cost, uncrewed systems to strike at naval fleets and disrupt maritime shipping; and both conflicts are set in narrow seas where one side commands a superior naval force, and the other, lacking a navy, employs an asymmetric force to limit their adversary’s use of the sea. There are, however, subtle but key differences between these two scenarios regarding how each side has implemented uncrewed technology, and lessons can be drawn from both.

The U.S. Marine Corps has been developing solutions to the China problem. Numbers will favor the PRC in any crisis that features extended naval warfare within a few hundred miles of China’s coast.
