I completely agree with this post by Mark Hyman, MD. Antidepressants are a clear example of how our current model often treats symptoms by assuming that all depression is simply a lack of serotonin. Even if serotonin were the issue, the real question should be WHY serotonin levels are low in the first place. However, depression is often NOT just about serotonin, it can stem from unresolved trauma, chronic inflammation, gut health imbalances or nutrient deficiencies. Rather than addressing these underlying causes, medications create additional problems, like weight gain or emotional numbness. This really underscores the need for a shift towards a more holistic approach that focuses on prevention and overall wellness rather than just managing symptoms.
