This year, we've been asking Registered Apprenticeship Employers and apprentices what this program means to them. Being an apprentice has allowed restaurant workers to jump-start their careers while gaining hands-on experience. Being a Registered Apprenticeship Employer has allowed restaurants in Colorado to fill positions with driven, talented individuals and has allowed some businesses to receive grant money.💰 The Colorado Restaurant Foundation is proud to be selected to implement certified apprenticeship programs launched through a partnership with the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. These workforce development programs will help Colorado restaurants and hotels expand their teams at a crucial time in the industry’s history. Derby College: Empowering Culinary Talent Through Apprenticeships In the ever-evolving culinary industry, where innovation and expertise are essential, apprenticeships play a crucial role in shaping the future. Tom, a former Derby College apprentice and now head chef, is a strong advocate for this pathway, crediting apprenticeships as the foundation for developing and retaining young talent. Currently leading a team that includes DCG apprentices Tilly and Chloe at Fairways, Tom emphasises the value of nurturing a team through the College’s programs. He states, “Given the challenges our industry faces, it’s vital that employers invest in retaining young, enthusiastic chefs who are eager to learn and grow.” With apprentices progressing through Levels 2 and 3, this approach provides continuity for both employers and staff, fostering long-term careers and ensuring businesses retain skilled workers. Restaurant Youth Registered Apprenticeship. (RYRA) Like many people, I started working in the industry in a dish room. My son just started at a place we love, doing the same. I asked him how he felt after his first shift. He said he liked it, and specifically he mentioned he has a good manager and trainer. Many of us Gen Xers learned what we know now - through the informal mentorship of chefs and managers. Back at the turn of the century, I wish 17-year-old David had understood apprenticeship and that it was an option. Instead I put my head down and started washing dishes, and it was the beginning of a fantastic journey. There is so much supported professional development available for newcomers to the industry in 2024. Apprenticeships are also available to people who have enjoyed successful employment and want to add formalized knowledge, skills, and abilities to their craft. Apprenticeships provide access to information and education that propels people up the ladders of promotion and economic mobility. We know this. Apprenticeships are cool like that. Line Cook? Restaurant Manager? Kitchen Manager? Which apprenticeship(s) would work in your house? The NRAEF will cover Related and Training and Instruction for all three. (This is a big bucket full of industry recognized certifications and information!) Apprenticeships mean #recruitment #retention #education #hospitality #skills #knowledge #craft We know this. Did you know this? The data tells us this. Most importantly? Youth and students like Zymire tell us this. Youth are seeking earn while you learn opportunities through registered apprenticeships in restaurants and hotels across the country. Who do you need to share this information with? We'd love to tell you more. Reach out to me or the team at the NRAEF to begin your journey! We can direct employers, apprentices, workforce development professionals and educators towards supported turn-key hospitality sector apprenticeships. HSRA and RYRA provide provide a powerful educational advantage to students and the businesses that employ them. Let's talk!
