🌄 Idaho's rangelands cover nearly half of the state's total land area, totaling approximately 26 million acres. The Idaho Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administers 11.5 million acres for livestock grazing for over 1600 livestock producers through a 10-year permitting process. 🌄 One impactful project in the Human-Environment Systems program aims to give clear insight into rangeland management by comparing the indicators and knowledge systems of BLM specialists and ranchers. BLM specialists and ranchers collaborate to administer permit terms, ensuring sustainable rangeland management for multiple uses. Both groups bring unique knowledge to the table, essential for effective management. Ecological indicators play a crucial role in monitoring ecosystem changes and guiding management decisions. Understanding these changes and how to respond is a constant question for managers, who rely on monitoring and knowledge of the ecosystem to adapt. Interviews administered by the HES project team with stakeholders across Idaho will inform the creation of ecological calendars, providing insights into common observations about the land and areas requiring management flexibility and adaptation. This research, facilitated by HES, fosters collaboration and adaptation in rangeland management. It ensures sustainable practices in the face of environmental challenges, benefiting Idaho's agricultural communities for generations. #sustainability #environment (📷: HES website)
