Next week, CIEL experts will be at the UN Climate Talks in Germany, monitoring government’s response to the enormous ambition gap & advocating for climate justice. The climate talks in Bonn take place against a backdrop of devastating climate chaos and increasing restrictions on freedom of assembly and protest at UN Climate Negotiations. Condemning the unfolding genocide in Gaza, we want to remind policymakers that there can be no climate justice without human rights. CIEL joined the call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, an end to illegal occupation and apartheid, and accountability for all who are complicit in war crimes and crimes against humanity. Our experts will be focusing on: - The intersection between human rights and climate justice - The need for the provision and urgent scaling up of finance to meet the needs of climate-vulnerable communities and developing countries - Remedy for climate harm - Dangerous distractions such as carbon offsets and geoengineering, and their human rights risks - The need for an urgent, equitable, and full phaseout of all fossil fuels - The need to protect the civic space, including respecting and protecting the rights to freedom of expression and assembly at the UN climate negotiations and by their host countries. Follow our experts for more update from the negotiations: Erika Lennon, Lien Vandamme & Mary Church. #ClimateJustice #HumanRights #ClimateTalks #SB60 #COP29

“Death and destruction from climate violence and genocide in Gaza is being actively fuelled by the actions of rich countries such as the USA, UK and EU. They are willing to burn down the rules-based system, trash international law and no longer even pretend that the lives of black and brown people matter. When people of conscience stand up to protect our planet and expose the complicity of Western governments, its banks and corporations that are profiting from repression and fuelling climate catastrophe, they are being met with repression, authoritarianism, and criminalization. We stand at a crossroads with the very future of humanity at stake, facing a life or death struggle for humanity: on the one side the right of everyone to live with dignity or a world of walls and fences and sacrificed people.” — Asad Rehman | Read more from Climate Action Network International

The climate negotiations at the ongoing Bonn Climate Conference are deeply related to human rights, as the impact of climate change on human rights is undeniable. Climate action must take a human rights-based approach to ensure social and climate justice. Other than the crucial fossil fuels phasing-out and adequate climate finance, CarbonCare InnoLab (CCIL) also explores some other global climate change and human rights issues, including the first Expert Dialogue on Children's rights and climate change, the human rights impact of some of the carbon offset projects and the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful protests in climate negotiations. To help companies engage in effective climate advocacy, the UN Global Compact Network UK has organised a 4-part webinar series to provide practical guidance on how companies can contribute towards driving the regulatory outcomes needed to deliver on their net zero goals. Today, we joined the second session of the series discussing 'The Role of Industry Associations'. Hearing from the session's speakers, Heather Buchanan, Ben Pincombe, Louise Kjellerup Roper, Miguel Angel Munoz Rodriguez, and Sarah Cook, CDMP, the session explored how companies can monitor their indirect climate-related corporate lobbying activities and positively engage in third-party coalitions to drive more ambitious government climate policies. Specifically, Heather discussed the main challenges that industry associations typically face around climate policy advocacy and how we ensure they are not hampered by the ambitions of the "lowest common denominator". What a landmark victory in climate litigation. Legally setting precedent by successfully linking human rights to climate impact will hopefully have a resounding effect globally. All done by a group of 2000 determined Swiss women, known as KlimaSeniorinnen and aged over 64. They argued that their government's climate inaction put them at risk of dying during heatwaves. And won! The sentence below is something to think about. What do we want our legacy to be? "It is clear that future generations are likely to bear an increasingly severe burden of the consequences of present failures and omissions to combat climate change" #esg #climatechange

Evidence is mounting that the 1.5 °C goal of the Paris Agreement is unrealistic. But, contrary to many in the scientific community, major NGOs have remained steadfast in their support for this target. We argue that this is because “unrealistic” or aspirational targets can serve important political objectives, including becoming focal points for coalition-building and broad-based mobilization and allowing for effective naming and shaming. Here's a short open-access piece: https://lnkd.in/gmafF9tY
