Why Does the Healthcare Press Call Companies With Knucklehead Strategies "Disrupters"? Cigna just announced that it wrote off $1.8 billion of its $2.5 billion investment in VillageMD that it made in late 2022, and CVS slashed its 2024 outlook. I don't mean to be critical, but anyone with a deep knowledge of healthcare and a calculator knows that employing PCPS is not a profitable stand-alone business. Why is this strategy considered "disruptive" and not "dumb?" I guess it can be considered "disruptive" since the doctor-patient relationship becomes 'disrupted' if the strategy fails. Good healthcare businesses include Ortho ASCs, highly functioning health systems in favorable markets with a) exceptional leadership, and b) well-run medical groups that include PCPs, GI centers, and efficient home health providers.
