Given all the buzz about AI "increasing productivity" and "reshaping society", as an AI professional, you could think I am using AI for everything. I am not. And nor should you. Not that AI is useless, but that it takes planning and effort to use adequately, and doesn't help with everything. Blind testing on a variety of business tasks have shown that GenAI is not yet as reliable or cost effective to roll out as much simple, more scalable methods (ranging from regexps to basic decision trees). And my attempts at using GenAI to make things easier or faster have brought vastly more frustration in actually getting it to work reliably than what a slightly boring 15m of scripting would be able to achieve. You can either believe that I am really good at scripting (I am), or that AI is shit (it is). I am not saying that AI will never get good enough. But given that there is about the same gap, in terms of efficacy and return on investment, between ELISA and ChatGPT, and ChatGPT and quality-managed hand crafted algorithms, it's not going to be next year.
