Two Euro's 2024 meets Business Insights 😀 Like many Scottish fans watching their team over the 3 recent Euro's games I was left with a sense of definite disappointment ( stronger words could have been used at this point 😉) at how it all ended up. However...... looking to the positive I do think there were 2 clear learnings for any business / organisation to take from this "Scottish Case Study". 1. Vision. The stated vision for this Scottish team was predominantly " get 4 points". What that meant was that in a group of 4 teams the ambition was to finish third. Not exactly inspiring - a low bar if missed (and it was) then last place and thus tournament exit awaits. Although not shown at this tournament this team were actually quite good. Why not a vision of being second? (more than capable) And thus immediate qualification to the next round? And then if Scotland "got out of the group" then why not quarter finals? Aspirational. Versus - " 4points and then I'm not really sure" Insight - A vision that is really clear and carries healthy aspiration ( without being delusional) usually inspires / demands a performance that very often delivers it! 2. Strategy. The last game was a must win game. 3 points necessary. In football that means goals must be scored 😉. The team stayed nearly identical to the previous two games that managed "not a lot" of goal action. Yet there were players who had a pedigree of scoring goals ( and creating goal scoring chances) that got very few minutes or no minutes at all. And guess what - no goals were scored ( for Scotland anyway 😉). Insight - If a strategy can be defined as a "set of actions that win" then taking action that matched the team personnel, structure and tactics to the desired result ( scoring more goals than Hungary) would seem like an optimal starting point.
