I had the opportunity to attend the Student Designers Networking Night sponsored by Adobe and organised by SAIC AIGA. I had the pleasure of meeting student designers from Loyola, DePaul, UIC, Columbia and more. And being able to communicate our love for design in that one night. This was an amazing experience, that you so much for this opportunity.

Launch is coming up! It's a conference for students ready to launch their career. "Build new skills, network with peers, receive professional guidance. This 2-day conference fosters creativity and innovation through meaningful connections as you embark on the next steps of your design journeys." I'll be there on Saturday listening and sharing with students,...and chatting about their portfolios as one the portfolio reviewers. 😀 https://lnkd.in/eRPajVC3

The Romanticization of Destiny As a child and well into my teenage years, I was often asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Two aspects of this question always intrigued me: Does it have to be just one thing? And when do we stop "growing up"? While my peers seemed to have clear answers, I often found myself negotiating what felt right for me. At 17, I secured a digital art and design scholarship at Central Connecticut State University. Fresh out of completing my CXC results, I had no idea how pivotal this opportunity would be. A particular test during my scholarship journey measured whether I leaned more toward the analytical or creative side of my brain. Every time I took it, the results were inconclusive—landing almost perfectly balanced between the two. My tutors faced a dilemma: Your talents seem equally aligned in both directions. What do you want to pursue? Without hesitation, I responded, "I want to master Photoshop over the next six weeks." That choice led me to enroll in digital design classes, unknowingly laying the groundwork for a lifelong curiosity. Lessons Along the Way This experience taught me that I never had to choose between my analytical assessments and my creative problem-solving abilities. Instead of seeing them as opposing forces, I embraced them as complementary strengths. Why endure a dichotomy when they can coexist harmoniously? Here’s what I’ve learned: Growing Up Is Continuous I don’t know if I’ll ever stop "growing up," and I’ve embraced the joy of learning and retooling in both design and engineering. You Don’t Have to Choose Just One Path The notion that you must conform to a single career or identity is limiting. By contributing to multiple fields, I’ve found fulfillment in exploring the intersections of my skills. Destiny Is Fluid, Not Fixed Destiny, to me, is less about a singular endpoint and more about embracing a curious mind and a brave soul. It’s about following where you’re most needed and appreciated. To anyone navigating their own path, I encourage you to dare, dream, and design the life that feels true to you. Have a great weekend! Dare.Dream.Design_ b8s.thatsgenius.org

Today was the last learning lab for my August cohort of students on Service Design Academy's Professional Development Award in Service Design. How on EARTH is it already December??? 🙀 Dr. Jo and I tried something new for this unit: giving students the opportunity to create a first draft of their project proposals during the class - with a whole room of critical friends on hand - rather than asking them to write something quickly the night before like previous years. 😬😅 It was so nice to watch eight beautifully crafted project proposals appear on the Miro board, encouraged by a new approach and a (hopefully) cortisol-free environment. I love a successful prototype! 🔥 At the end of each class, we ask folk to leave their feedback in the form of responses to "I liked, I learned, and I suggest." Mission successful I think: one single sticky note saying I suggest "keep delivering the course". Thanks, anonymous learner! Continue to deliver the course we shall! 💖

I think such short programs can be a good way, to begin your learning journey. They are structured and practice oriented. But there is a lot that goes into learning a craft. Everyone trying to transition into tech will greatly increase their chances for longterm career success if they give themselves proper time to thoroughly learn the necessary skills. Rushing your way into it, will be an uphill climb and may need a great amount of resilience.

Be different. Focus on solving problems that you personally encounter instead of doing the same projects everyone else does. Come up with new ideas about how AI will change how we do things online. You have to do more to stand out.

Goodness me, service codesign week-notes 44 has come round very quickly. My highlight of the week was most definitely having the privilege and pleasure of being on the employers panel for Design in STEM for The Open University Inclusive Futures event on Wednesday. The questions from students were so inspiring.... As well as progressing two service design projects this week👩🏻💻, have been continuing with scoping the literature for my research. Have also been reading an interesting article by Bill Hollins (2008) on success and failure in product and service design. In public not for profits this article describes how success if often seen as 'staying within budget'. It is also seen as important to set success indicators right at the start so that return on investment (ROI and SROI) can be determined and measured 📏. Now to start planning for the week ahead. This will include reviewing last months performance and roadmap 📈 in service design practice world, and hopefully making significant progress 🚀 in writing goals for my research. Have a good week whatever you have planned - here's to a good one 😊🫱🏻🫲🏻 #servicedesign #codesign #designleadership #designcareers #stemcareers #designresearch #designpsychology #inclusivedesign #universaldesign #inclusiveeducation #humancentreddesign #weeknotes #edi #designroadmap
