🌟 Outokumpu Annual Report 2023, including Sustainability Review, is out now 🌟 The work towards a world that lasts forever continued strong. 🌟 In 2023, our performance was solid despite a weak market environment, and throughout the year, we supported our customers in reducing their supply chain emissions and made great progress on our sustainability journey during 2023. The 2023 sustainability highlights include: 💚 Emission intensity reduced by 27% from 2016 baseline aligned with our science-based climate target to keep the 1.5°C ambition possible. In 2023, we were more than halfway towards the 2030 target. 🤝 Supported our customers in reducing their emissions by more than 12 million tonnes. ♻️ Record high recycled content rate of 95% in our production. Outokumpu’s business model is truly based on circularity. ⚡ 95% of our electricity mix globally was from low-carbon sources. Increasing the share of low-carbon electricity is one of the key elements in our decarbonization strategy. ❤️ +57 increase in diverse leaders. The overall ambition is to increase the number of diverse leaders by 100 by the end of 2025. 👷🏽Historic results in safety: work-related accidents decreased 83% from 2016 to 2023. However, safety requires continuous work - one incident is one too many. 💎 Decided on targeted investments to further reduce our emissions in the future with biocoke, low-carbon energy and raw materials. 🏆 Ecovadis ranked Outokumpu among the top 1% of companies assessed with a Platinum rating and Financial Times ranked Outokumpu as a Climate Leader. 🌎 We took part in global climate discussions such as COP28 to advocate for the pivotal role of stainless steel in tackling #ClimateChange and accelerating the #GreenTransition. Welcome to the COP29 wrap-up! As the summit comes to an end, here are the top five stories you need to know. 1️⃣ COP29 concludes: As the summit comes to an end, Vaishali Nigam Sinha, founder of ReNew, shares a few key takeaways. COP29 has achieved breakthroughs in carbon trading and seen the launch of bold energy initiatives. However, significant gaps in climate finance and renewable energy scaling highlight the urgent need for global accountability and collaboration, Sinha says. https://lnkd.in/gcpbYDkJ 2️⃣ What sustainable businesses are all about: Companies in India have increasingly started to prioritise sustainable practices in their businesses. But “sustainability in business today goes beyond reducing environmental impact,” says Muskan Jain, Assistant Vice President - Global Corporate Social Responsibility at EXL. She adds that it’s about incorporating ESG values into business strategies for creating long-term value. https://lnkd.in/gc4RjZCN 3️⃣ Building a greener tomorrow: How can companies demonstrate environmental responsibility every day? Ankkush Agarwal, Head of Corporate Operations at Zeta, highlights the daily steps that his company takes to demonstrate environmental responsibility. They include switching to compostable garbage bags, installing water-saving tap attachments, using recycled copier paper, and optimising electricity use. https://lnkd.in/gXkmuW9w 4️⃣ What sustainability means for manufacturing: As India’s manufacturing industry grows, adopting a sustainable path is vital. But what does sustainability in manufacturing mean? Ajay DD Singhania, MD and CEO at EPACK Durable Limited, believes it is not only about new technologies but rethinking and redesigning every step of the process. https://lnkd.in/gmj92Qcs 5️⃣ Why sustainability matters: LinkedIn member Bikas Pandey believes that sustainability is a duty. Companies that follow a sustainable approach quickly gain trust from customers, employees, and investors. He suggests a few ways to incorporate sustainable practices in businesses. https://lnkd.in/gkQQDrKC ✍: Divya Pathak #GreenerTogether

Great insights from COP29! It's clear that sustainability is no longer just about reducing environmental impact but embedding ESG values into business strategies for long-term success. The practical steps highlighted by Ankkush Agarwal and Ajay DD Singhania show how companies can take action daily. As Bikas Pandey mentions, sustainability is a duty, and it's encouraging to see businesses increasingly prioritize it. Looking forward to seeing more companies adopt these practices for a greener future!

As global leaders gather at Cop29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, I'm reminded of a key takeaway from my recent article on the circular economy: “We need to increasingly shift to these nature-based solutions, reduce use of virgin- and fossil-based materials, and increase use of renewable and regeneratively grown resources.” Dr. Felix Philipp. While the global climate summit has had some successes so far, such as Brazil and the UK announcing ambitious new climate action plans, there are still challenges, including diplomatic tensions and the potential withdrawal of the United States from future funding deals. The success of COP29 will largely depend on whether these financial and diplomatic hurdles can be overcome. But some private banks are stepping up their bets on the “circular economy”. Many experts believe this cycle, in which materials never become waste and nature is regenerated, is fast becoming a megatrend. Please read my latest for Professional Wealth Management (PWM) with commentary from Dr. Felix Philipp of Lombard Odier Group, Yi Shi of Pictet Asset Management, Martin Conroy, CFA of KBI Global Investors and Georgios Sakoulis of GMO. #COP29 #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #Innovation #ClimateAction https://lnkd.in/etUrHWrr

🌍 And that's a wrap! #ClimateWeekNYC was both energizing and insightful. I had the opportunity to engage with brilliant thought leaders, startups, corporates, and policymakers. Key takeaways: 1️⃣ #Circularity & #Climate Are Linked Scaling up circularity is essential for a decarbonized future. Encouraging to see this theme gaining traction, with hopes for more at COP29 Azerbaijan. 2️⃣ Eye-Opening Stat The weight of human-made objects now exceeds all living species—something to reflect on. William McDonough’s insights on using nature as a model, especially trees, were fascinating. 3️⃣ Academia & Finance Are All In Great to see investment from universities and financial institutions. Exciting work from Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment and Center on Global Energy Policy around #ThematicBonds and #SolarRecycling. 4️⃣ Critical Minerals Matter The mining sector plays a crucial role in circularity, both in operations and end-product lifecycle. Accenture is leading thought on this ahead of COP29. 5️⃣ Startups Are Leading Startups are essential to this transition. Special shoutout to Xerion Advanced Battery Corp, Endolith, SOLARCYCLE, PHNX Materials, Factorial Energy,Newlab, SE Ventures, Overture , Derek Handley 6️⃣ Policymakers Making Progress Policymakers are giving circularity much-needed attention. There’s a critical need to modernize outdated frameworks designed for a linear economy. Thanks to Ellen MacArthur Foundation for curating opportunities to debate such topics 7️⃣ AI & Energy Interesting tension between the energy demands of #ArtificialIntelligence and #DataCenters and decarbonization. The concept of "additionality" is gaining momentum—will we see recycled green copper next? Finally, I had the chance to virtually join #FTMining Summit earlier today, where I discussed circularity’s potential to help alleviate supply-demand gaps. The wider mining industry could benefit from embracing broader innovation, and thinking outside our own echo chambers!
