Exciting Insights from the 2024 ELIS Survey: AI and Pricing Trends in the Language Industry!    In the evolving landscape of the language industry, the 2024 ELIS survey reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) is now at the forefront of discussions, together with machine translation and pricing.  While some respondents view AI positively and talk about its usefulness as a tool, a draft creator and a driver for human translation requests, independent language professionals express reservations, especially regarding its impact on pricing. AI implementation in university programmes surfaced as a significant challenge, especially when it comes to adapting to technological changes. Students, on the other hand, are more focused on securing internships and navigating their professional future. To address these different concerns, we are meeting with partners like the European Master’s in Translation university network (#EMTnet) and the language industry expert group (LIND) to discuss training and internship opportunities.  Both students and companies clearly consider it essential to  focus on training, skills, and work experience. Despite concerns about economic viability and pricing, the survey suggests possible avenues for growth, especially for specialised players in the language industry. AI in translation workflows: A reality you can't ignore ⚠ On Friday last week, I had the chance to attend the AI Careers event in Madrid. Big companies, like Amazon and Naturgy shared their insights. And surprisingly or not, integrating AI into the translation workflows has become a priority AI use case. 👈 I think that all players in the Localization Industry will have to be adapting to these moves. You may like it or not, but AI has already become a reality for the Localization Industry. In my opinion, there are only 3 choices here: 1️⃣ Reject this reality and leave the industry. 2️⃣ Accept it and adapt. 3️⃣ Deny it now, but eventually, you’ll have to choose one of the first two. 👉 Adaptation and flexibility are going to be key here. How important is it to be AI literate? 🚀 Having started my internship with Language Connexion France, as an English Language Assistant, I am eager to find ways to facilitate not only my teaching, but also my planning, too. So, when I read that NATESOL Northern Association of TESOL were hosting their first webinar of the academic year, I signed straight up. The first webinar focused on using AI tools to help English Language Teachers with differentiation and feedback. As this is my first professional role working in a school, I am learning that methods of teaching can change at a quicker pace than perhaps we’d expect, and the use of AI is just one of them. It was intriguing to listen to how other teachers have been using AI, as well as how important ‘prompting’ is, however I was eager to explore possible implications of AI for the future of education. As Gemma De La Cruz-Duffy aptly put it, AI won’t ever replace us as teachers, but someone who is confident in using AI could. The webinar, for me, has highlighted the importance of recognizing AI not as a trend, but rather a transformative tool that we should be educating ourselves on.
