What do California and Catalonia have in common? 🤔 Although we are far away, we are bioregions with a #Mediterranean climate 🌏 And not only these two places, but we share it also with other areas such as South Australia, Chile and South Africa, among others!!! 🌡 Considering that the Mediterranean region is the second most affected one in the world by the climate crisis after the Arctic, we need to establish common strategies to face #climatechange. How can we do it? 👇 To make it possible, several regions have joined the so-called Mediterranean Climate Action Partnership (MCAP) 🤝 It was launched in 2023 at #COP28 and, so far, has 15 members representing bioregions in Africa, Australia, Europe, and North and South America. The main goal? 🎯 Working together to adapt to the increasing climate threats of #drought, wildfires and heat 🔥 🌲 . Last week in #Barcelona our researchers Lluís Brotons & our scientific coordinator, who oversees CREAF’s science for policy strategy, Alicia Pérez-Porro, PhD, participated in an inaugural MCAP’s convening to share promising practices from our home regions. 📅 But there is more... The MCAP held also last week an executive meeting at the MedCat Days 2024 in Barcelona, a space for reflexion and debate to analyse how to address climate change in the Mediterranean. Check out the Strategic Plan of the portfolio "Carbon dioxide and Nitrogen management and valorization" funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC) in the European Union, which ECOMO is a part of. Through this plan, we advocate the clear need to address the nexus between carbon dioxide and nitrogeN-cycles in a holistic manner, in light of their important mutual impact on climate change and biodiversity of many ecosystems, and certain strategies that envelope the two cycles. 💡 📝

Subnational governments don’t have a vote in diplomatic multilateral processes like UNFCCC COPs but their voice is key to increase and elevate #climate and #biodiversity ambition. The #MCAP (www.medclimate.org) is one of these examples of how action from subnational governments can make a difference, and how it is possible to include #science from the inception. It was an honor to witness its launched at #COP28 last year, and I’m proud to be a part of it. #science4policy #sciencediplomacy #sciencepolicyinterface

🌊 I'm thrilled to share that I had the opportunity to present insights from the newly published report, "Integrating the Ocean into the Climate Regime: Progress Report and Future Prospects," during this year's Ocean and Climate Change Dialogue. This report by the Iddri and the Ocean & Climate Platform examines recent efforts to integrate the ocean into the climate regime, and identifies ways to boost action. Key takeaways include: 1️⃣ Strengthening ocean-based measures in the next round of national climate strategies - supported by quantified targets and robust means of implementation, 2️⃣ Maximising the impact of the Ocean and Climate Change Dialogue to support the implementation of these measures, including by adopting a five-year roadmap to outline clear objectives and priorities for collaboration, 3️⃣ Enhancing synergies with the national biodiversity strategies. I'm excited about the prospects this report presents and look forward to our collective efforts to advance ocean-climate action on the road to #COP29. Nature and climate are intricately linked. - The UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) were both adopted at the 1992 Earth Summit,but have separate mandates - However, they are highly complementary and can effectively collaborate and support alignment at the national level to provide effective action on the ground. >> Blue Marine Foundation and the Ocean & Climate Platform released the policy brief, "Blue Thread: Aligning National Climate and Biodiversity Strategies”.  - It explores how the ocean can provide integrated solutions to address crises, weaving a “blue thread” - It explores how the #OceanBreakthroughs, and the ocean-based solutions they provide, can enhance policy coherence, efficiency, and impact across national strategies.  - By identifying turning points to reach by 2030 in five key ocean sectors – marine conservation, shipping, offshore renewable energy, aquatic food and coastal tourism, they act as a powerful catalyst to connect climate and biodiversity goals. - It also considers different levers and opportunities to accelerate and scale these solutions.  Full brief attached.
