But despite all we know, we still have only discovered 10% of Ocean life. A 28-day expedition of Nazca Ridge, 900 miles off the coast of Chile in the southeast Pacific Ocean, revealed a new underwater mountain over 1.9 miles tall that supports a thriving deep-sea ecosystem. Scientists found at least 20 new species while mapping 10 seamounts across the undersea ridge. These species include a sea urchin, a starfish and a squat lobster. Nazca Ridge is one of several global locations under consideration for designation as a high seas marine protected area. As climate change and habitat loss threaten biodiversity, it's essential to understand what we risk losing. New seamounts, sponges, crustaceans, coral and more were discovered on a recent @schmidtocean expedition. The expedition, named “Seamounts of the Southeast Pacific,” was carried out on the Schmidt Ocean Institute ship Falkor between January 8 and February 11. They traveled to the underwater mountains of the Nazca and Salas y Gómez mountain ranges, two chains of more than 200 underwater mountains that extend, together, across 2,900 kilometers from Chile to Easter Island, and the Juan Fernández and Nazca-Desventuradas marine parks. Researchers aboard the ship mapped 52,800 square kilometers and found four seamounts that had never been recorded. The largest of them rises up to 3,530 meters above the seabed. Thanks to the help of a robot that surveyed the slopes of these mountains, scientists found more than 100 species that so far seem to be completely new to science. Among them there are sponges, urchins, crustaceans, mollusks and corals. It is estimated that more than 80% of the ocean is still unexplored, so each discovery that scientists make in marine ecosystems represents an important achievement. #ExploreDontExploit #DefendTheDeep

Natural History - Over 100 new alien-like species discovered in Chile's underwater mountain range - An international team of scientists discovered more than 100 previously unknown species of marine life near towering seamounts off the coast of Chile. The expedition, led by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, explored the Salas y Gómez Ridge at depths of almost 15,000 feet, mapping over 20,000 square miles of seamounts. In just one year, the CDF made significant discoveries in the deep-ocean realm of Galapagos and the Eastern Tropical Pacific. In 2023, five major expeditions in the Galapagos Marine Reserve (GMR) unveiled incredible new insights about the hidden depths of Galapagos. 🪸 Highlights included: - 6 deep-sea expeditions, of which 5 major ones exploring the depths of our ocean - 400+ specimens collected for identification and curation across the full range of GMR depths - 2 hydrothermal vent sites discovered - 1092 dive hours (the equivalent of 50 days!) - 78 deep-ocean dives conducted over 117 days at sea - 148 TB of high-resolution video surveys collected - 1487 samples collected ranging from marine sediments, water quality to biological collections - 15 species previously unknown to the region documented 🌊🪸 These groundbreaking discoveries enhance our understanding of the Galapagos' deep-sea ecosystems and underscore the importance of continued exploration and conservation efforts.
