Succession planning is a key aspect of managing the challenge of establishing and maintaining a balanced and qualified board. I began planning for my succession as chair of a charity a few months into the role (assuming my fellow trustees continue to put up with me). For me a charitable board does not necessarily need to include trustees with any particular skills (such as financial or legal experience), rather a broad level of judgement from the overall board about when it is necessary to draw in those skills. The other challenge as I see it is to make people aware of the opportunity in the first place, to advise and reassure about the responsibilities of the role, and to engage people in how rewarding being a charity trustee can be.

I read this report yesterday and there are some devastating statistics. 💔85% of all charitable income in England and Wales goes to just 4 per cent of registered charities. 💔 93 % of all charitable income in Scotland, goes to 6 per cent of charities. 💔 97% of charities that close are small and medium sized charities. This report is staggering, yet totally believable because we and our member network are experiencing its findings every day. I often say, and absolutely know from experience, national charities cannot do what local charities can do. To be honest I usually say this in the context of infrastructure or capacity-building support, but nevertheless it remains true. National infrastructure cannot do what local infrastucture (where it still exists) can. Yet according to this report national organisations seem to be benefitting from a huge percentage of the available funding, despite acknowledgement from the very top of the value of the grass roots organisations meeting the local need each day. These are often organisations run by local people who know their areas, know those who receive their support and who will stay far beyond the time when the money runs out. When an opportunity to make a difference by helping someone in your family, friends, at work or anywhere presents itself, don’t let it slip by, as the best opportunities are rare. Mentoring or helping others benefits you as much as the person you helped. If your only definition of helping others is donating to charities, then you are missing out. The best most effective way to help people is directly, one on one, giving of yourself. Paying it forward is a way of life not just a fad. As long as you take care of yourself first, you will have time for others. #Mentoring #HelpingOthers #MakeADifference

Smaller charities are facing incredibly challenging times. The Overlooked and Underfunded report from The Centre for Social Justice states that post pandemic charities expenses have risen by an average of 12%, and income 3%. You don’t need to be an accountant to see that these numbers create an operational headache. Being a trustee I’ve witnesssd the challenges first hand. I know just how much the income is needed to support incredibly valuable community services. Sometimes these services are those that many people think are fully funded, they’re not. One thing I know with certainty is that I’ve never worked with such passionate and resilient Individuals. The future will be a challenge but we’ll work together for change.

Why I don't like sky-diving and cake-sales raising money for charity. I've been wondering about this a lot recently due to the challenges of the economic climate and because I'm being asked for advice quite a bit on setting up a Community Interest Company (CIC). Charities and social enterprises mostly do incredible work. Like any organisation or business, some could be better, more impactful and more cost effective. Many exist in a space where there are shortcomings in provision and support for some of those struggling most in our communities. Often, they are better placed to deliver support than the state and frequently do it better. So the reason Your Own Place CIC has never (Covid aside) sought public donations via sky-diving and cake-sales, is basically because I think the work we do is worth more than people's spare change and that this approach sidelines people's suffering. Whether you agree that the state should be enlarged as a safety net or not to fund our work, surely preventing homelessness and the lives involved deserve better than the uncertainty of how many cakes were sold on Saturday afternoon? #impact #socialenterprise #housing #charity #cics #vcse #thirdsector #leadership #constitution #equity #fundraising #parity #donations
