Density Matters. I’ve been there- had massive sponsorship and exhibit growth on an event. The finance team is applauding, you get a good bonus. But you know better…. Exhibitors start to say there’s less people. You check the numbers- they look marginally better than last year but it feels different. Why? Because they didn’t grow in proportion. It’s not to say it always can, but now that same number of attendees is spread out more in terms of appts, physical space, time. We can argue that the exhibit growth came from areas that didn’t compete, so it’s fine. WRONG. Density matters- you have more people competing for less attention. Their perception is there are less people and in a way there is- less people per exhibitor, less people for them. I get asked daily about if I know good sales people- but you know what you should be focusing on instead? 💡 Having Restaint- don’t sell everything because you can, sell it when you know you’ll deliver. 💡 Investing in audience managers- retain contractors or people who understand and care about the audience and their needs, not just why they’re going to an event 💡 Redirecting the focus of the team. No lounge or expensive design concept is going to matter if the audience isn’t engaged. I know, I know- It sounds like common sense- but if we know it to be true then why is the one same problem I’ve seen at 8 shows so far in 2024? Because it’s hard yards. It’s not autopilot and it’s not directly adding to revenue. But it is the most important and given enough time, will be what matters to your event trajectory. And as the ever changing value equation with ROI, return on time, that density is sure going to be a factor as well.
