Day 2 of the 7-Day Environmental Sustainability Challenge As someone passionate about environmental sustainability, I feel the need to address a pressing issue in our beloved city of Ibadan. The pollution crisis in Ibadan has reached alarming levels, posing a threat to both our environment and our health. Our streets are often littered with plastic waste, which clogs drainage systems and leads to flooding during heavy rains. The Ogunpa River, once a source of life for our community, now bears the burden of industrial waste and domestic sewage. The air we breathe is increasingly polluted by vehicle emissions and the burning of waste, contributing to respiratory issues among residents. Improper waste management has led to overflowing dumpsites, creating breeding grounds for disease-carrying pests. The indiscriminate disposal of electronic waste poses a grave threat to our soil and groundwater. As residents of Ibadan, we need to recognize our role in this crisis and take action. By adopting sustainable practices such as proper waste segregation, reducing the use of single-use plastics, and supporting local recycling initiatives, we can make a difference. It's time for us to come together to clean up our city, protect our natural resources, and create a healthier environment for future generations. Together, we can transform Ibadan into a model of urban sustainability. Let's start today. 🌍 Environmental Sustainability: Kenya's Path to a Greener Future 🌱 As Kenya continues to face the dual challenges of economic growth and climate change, environmental sustainability has never been more crucial. With our rich natural resources and diverse ecosystems, we stand at a crossroads—will we choose a path that honors and protects our environment, or will we allow short-term gains to jeopardize our future? 💧 Water Crisis: Droughts and water shortages are becoming more frequent, affecting millions of Kenyans. Sustainable water management and conservation practices are essential to ensure that every citizen has access to this precious resource. 🌿 Deforestation: Our forests are the lungs of our nation, yet they are being depleted at an alarming rate. We must prioritize reforestation and sustainable land use practices to preserve our biodiversity and combat climate change. 🚮 Waste Management: From the bustling streets of Nairobi to our rural areas, waste management remains a critical issue. It's time for innovative solutions that embrace recycling, reduce plastic use, and promote responsible consumption. ⚡ Renewable Energy: Kenya has made strides in harnessing renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and geothermal. Let’s continue to invest in these green technologies to power our future sustainably and reduce our carbon footprint. ★ Now more than ever, the choices we make will define the legacy we leave for future generations. Let’s champion policies, businesses, and practices that prioritize sustainability, not just as a buzzword, but as a way of life. ★ Together, we can lead Kenya toward a future where economic development and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. 🌳 What actions are you taking to ensure a sustainable future for Kenya? Share your thoughts and let’s inspire each other to make a positive impact! 💚 #Sustainability #Kenya #ClimateAction #GreenFuture #EnvironmentalStewardship #RenewableEnergy

Acted works towards a ‘3ZERO’ world, Zero Carbon, Zero Exclusion and Zero Poverty. As part of our work towards Zero Carbon, Acted has undertaken a rapid assessment in Kismayo, Baidoa, Banadir, and Hargeisa, Somalia/land, to identify opportunities to: i) study circularity within the plastic and bio-waste value chains, and ii) develop programming that catalyzes these opportunities. In Somalia/land, the heightened occurrence of extreme climate events has evolved from sporadic incidents to a troubling norm over the past few decades. This has intensified the ecological challenges faced by the country, arising primarily from climate change, land degradation, biodiversity loss, and inadequate environmental governance. These challenges collectively impose significant pressure on Somalia's natural ecosystems, exacerbating the vulnerability of local communities. Review the full report on this link: https://shorturl.at/stGMV #‘3ZERO’world, #ZeroCarbon, #ZeroExclusion and #ZeroPoverty.

Let’s save the Pearl of Africa our Motherland -Uganda I am re-sharing this message especially as we come to yet another landmark to celebrate our independence! A call to law makers, the ministers, judiciary, religious leaders, Educationists, Development partners and the citizens. Uganda is facing a growing water pollution crisis due to toxic runoff from industries, sewage, and chemicals which pose a threat to the country’s lakes and rivers. According to the National Environment Management Authority, water pollution is the second-biggest environmental threat in Uganda after deforestation. Yet we have various policy guidelines in place; Vision 2040 and the National Development Plan II – map out an ambitious growth agenda for the coming decades. However, this growth is threatened by the country’s vulnerability to climate change, as 70% of the labor force is dependent on rain-fed agriculture, with rapid urbanization posing a further risk to the green transition. The government has developed the Uganda Green Growth Development Strategy (UGGDS) to guide efforts around green growth, focusing largely on green skills and business development in green sectors by investing in work-based placement programs and business accelerators, such as the Uganda Green Incubation Program. In spite of these we seem to be in the decline, driving through our natural rain forests’ such as Budongo, Mabira and Bwindi one glaringly sees encroachment. We still have a chance to save our motherland; Lets look at the number of plastic bottles produced in the country; all end up in drainage, swamps, lakes, rivers that feed our land. Others are buried in the soil that should produce food for entire East Africa Region. Every beverage company that starts in the name of investment adds to the number of plastic bottles/ bags produced and disposed in the ecosystem. Our country is a fertile land green blessed with fresh water bodies…. Who shall protect the motherland for future generations to come if we all keep silent. ‘Green economy could be our hope. Given the youth population and the level of unemployment among young people. Investing in the green economy would not only help create jobs but save our environment. Most green job initiatives in Uganda are still donor-driven and investment in green growth comes largely from donors, multilateral and international organizations. There is hope as many development partners involve in Food security and resilient building are increasingly promoting Climate smart agriculture. We need a concerted effort to reduce the impact of pollution and save our Motherland. We have over 500 Members of Parliament; What if all of you in your constituency promote green based intervention, save a swamp, lake, river, support youth projects on green job such as plastic recycling, garbage collections, Water source maintenance etc. This is the time we need our leaders to lead the way…. For God and My Country.
