📅 Today is the United Nations’ International Anti-Corruption Day #IACD2024. The FPC has worked extensively on issues of anti-corruption, highlighting how it can erode individuals fundamental rights as well as harm the democratic health of societies around the world. Research through our 'Unsafe for Scrutiny' project, has shown how it’s often those speaking out about financial crime and corruption, rather than those perpetrating it, who face the biggest consequences. These include strategic lawsuits against public participation (#SLAPPs). Foreign Secretary David Lammy recently announced a Government campaign to crack down on corruption and illicit finance, in an effort to ‘protect UK public, safeguard democracy, and support economic growth’: https://lnkd.in/e6zXkj6Y FPC welcomes the Foreign Secretary’s actions and rhetoric on the matter; however, we stress the need to include anti-SLAPP measures in the fight against corruption.
