Construction of Mumbai Pune Expressway, spanning 94 km, commenced in 1997 and reached completion by 2002. Despite facing technical and financial limitations, the project was successfully executed. Fast forward to 2017, the Maharashtra Government took a decisive step to address the missing link, a crucial 13.3 km segment, featuring two viaducts and two lengthy tunnels, with a sanctioned budget of Rupees 4797 crores. The Project , employing the EPC mode, was divided into two packages entrusted to M/s Navyuga Engineering and M/s AFCONS. Scheduled for completion by 2025, the project signifies a significant advancement in infrastructure development. With enhanced financial resources and advanced technical capabilities, the construction now embraces sophisticated elements like long tunnels and high Cable Stayed Bridges/viaducts. This progressive approach paves the way for future infrastructure projects to leverage cutting-edge construction methodologies. The Mumbai Pune Expressway stands as a testament to successful infrastructure development, with the earlier alignment in the Khandala Lonavala section having effectively served its purpose. The scumbags who doesn't know any technical aspect of how wind acts upon a structure and one who put strain on structural engineers to omit the actions caused by wind and other important factors should see this. May be the action of wind which we consider will act only once in 100 years, but still the structure should withstand with these ultimate wind speeds and seismic factors. So the point is structural engineers should not bend upon any other parties pressure to reduce the real impacts caused by the loads acting upon a structure. Challenges Overcome: Portal pier 255A of CMRL phase 2. Successful Erection of Steel Portal Beam ( Portal pier P255A) in Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase 2 The Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase 2 has achieved a significant milestone with the successful erection of a steel “portal beam” at portal pier 255A in package C4-ECV01 ( from Powerhouse to Porur Byspass), where the curved alignment crosses the flyover at Porur junction. While viaduct on approach could be completed, this particular peir was a challenge. The portal beam has to carry 49m curved span on either side. This location posed numerous challenges for designers and construction engineers, including: 1. Narrow working space and congested area to design the foundation and boring of piles in narrow service roads closer to Fly-over ramp on both sides. 2. Shifting of Utilities: 1.5m and 1.2m water pipelines catering to VIP areas. Difficulty in getting shut down. 3. Launching schemes: In case of PSC or RCC structure requirement for supporting arrangements on either side of the flyover, which would have necessitated blocking both service roads. Or supporting on Fly over carriage way which can’t take load. To overcome these challenges, original concrete portal was changed to steel. To reduce weight, a high-grade E350 steel structure weighing 145T was designed, with a 22m span. For erecting the portal the trail must be brought over the Flyover. Hence, the weight must be reduced to match with load carrying capacity of Flyover. The steel portal beam was fabricated in an RDSO-approved plant in Raipur, Chattisgarh, transported to Chennai in modules, and erected by the L&T team. The safe erection process was completed within 5 hours during a night shift on Saturday, 27th July 2024, using: - A loaded puller on the flyover - Two 500MT cranes positioned in service roads on either side of the flyover This achievement demonstrates the project team's expertise and commitment to finding innovative solutions to complex challenges. #phase2 #lntecv01 #corridor4 #steelportal #porurflyover
