In a major enhancement to the Janes events dataset, global military events have been verified and interconnected with multiple foundational data points, including systems and weapons, organisations, inventories, orders of battle, and installations. Using Janes military events data, our analysts were able to monitor patterns in the tempo and locations of missile tests and live-fire exercises in North Korea between November 2023 and February 2024. Janes is the only OSINT provider that delivers an in-depth understanding of who is involved, why it is happening, and what the likely outcomes might be, supporting analysts as they look for indicators and warnings and carry out pattern-of-life analysis. Discover how Janes interconnected intelligence can support your mission. Link in comments #NorthKorea #militaryevents

Today the Open Source Centre, alongside our colleagues at the Royal United Services Institute, unveiled its first official report! We wrote on how the West could disrupt the Russian artillery supply chain, what key factors to target, and who the main raw material providers are. As explained in detail in the paper, Russian industrial might is not so mighty if looked at from the right angle. Have a good read!
🚨We are thrilled to announce our new strategic partnership with the newly formed Open Source Centre (OSC) to deliver novel, open-source based research on the war in Ukraine and other conflicts. Our latest joint report provides a comprehensive analysis of Russia’s artillery supply chain to identify vulnerabilities and inform future policy decisions by Ukraine’s Western partners on supply chain disruption. The report also provides an indication of the expansion of Russia’s defence industry that is currently underway. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3zJnowN

📰The Future of Hybrid Warfare "The future is likely to see the most consequential form of armed conflict in the lower-to-middle portion of the conflict spectrum, likely with surrogates and proxies. Fortunately, NATO has invested time and thought into this problem and has slowly integrated countering surrogates and proxies into its strategies for collective defense and integrated deterrence." 👉Col. Matt Neumeyer, Department Head and military faculty for #GCMC's Strategic Security Studies Department, joined distinguished research fellow Frank Hoffman from National Defense University, and Benjamin Jensen, senior fellow at the CSIS International Security Program's Futures Lab for this installment of a Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) series that explores emerging challenges and opportunities that #NATO is likely to confront after its 75th anniversary. 🌐Check it out here https://lnkd.in/esD4tybY ----

The Future of Hybrid Warfare In the future, NATO should embrace the concept of hybrid warfare and incorporate it into how it deters and defends. Starting with resiliency as the first step, NATO can use its strengths to put adversaries at a disadvantage and strengthen its approach to hybrid warfare. Commentary by Frank Hoffman, Colonel Matt Neumeyer, and Benjamin Jensen — July 8, 2024 The future is likely to see the most consequential form of armed conflict in the lower-to-middle portion of the conflict spectrum, likely with surrogates and proxies. Fortunately, NATO has invested time and thought into this problem and has slowly integrated countering surrogates and proxies into its strategies for collective defense and integrated deterrence. As Russia continues to antagonize the West and China looks to gain advantages across the globe, NATO will have to reinforce its ability to detect, deter, and respond to this type of malign assault on its values and freedoms.

Though not a SOF-specific problem, Sandor Fabian (Ph. D.)'s article is a reminder that we need to reevaluate our National military relationship with technology. High tech solutions can provide great protection to the joint force and to our p[artners, but can also provide a false security (illusion) if we fail to first understand the role that "super-empowered populations" now play in war. Yes, technology is important, but Low tech and no tech solutions that are highly survivable and easily transferable to populations in crisis are invaluable. https://lnkd.in/eJUUitzc

Steve S. Sin, Ph.D., director of Unconventional & Asymmetric Threats Division, and Rhyner Washburn, research affiliate of Unconventional Weapons and Technology Group, delved into the relative efficacy of information campaigns, turning towards a more inside-out perspective of the Russia-Ukraine war. With the Russia-Ukraine war waged across all warfighting domains, the continuum between conventional and irregular warfare is pointedly evident in the Ukrainian execution of information operations via the cyber domain. Using social network analysis, the authors explored the Ukrainian utilization of the Telegram and Twitter platforms as tools to sustain information resistance against an enemy that is magnitudes larger and much better resourced. Their examination of the Ukrainian operationalization of information resistance as a component of information operations is an illustration of nuanced unconventional warfare – a core activity of irregular warfare – carried out by a state actor involved in a modern military conflict. Their insights are featured in a new chapter within START's latest edited volume, "The War in Ukraine Understanding Western Tools Short of War," edited by Egle Murauskaite and published by De Gruyter. https://lnkd.in/ewShHmX4 #UMD #START #UAT #UWT_UMD #WarInUkraine #RussiaUkraineWar #InformationOperation #InformationResistance #STARTresearch Irregular Warfare Center (IWC) Defense Security Cooperation University Strategic Studies Institute and US Army War College Press Defense Security Cooperation Agency Irregular Warfare Initiative National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) University of Maryland Research University of Maryland Joshua Hastey, PhD Dennis Walters Christopher Burns Lori Leffler Jan K.
