Global Perspectives — On the 17th of November, International Students' Day commemorates the struggles and achievements of students worldwide. First observed in 1941, this day initially marked the resistance of Czech students against Nazi occupation. Today, it serves as a symbol of the fight for equal access to education. In 2023, international student enrolment grew by 6%, with countries like Australia and Canada seeing record numbers. The day underscores the significance of education in breaking down barriers and promoting global understanding, while also recognising the challenges that students continue to face in accessing quality education. In the past few months, we have been hearing about #cuts in #international #student #enrollments due to government and public fears of current and future overcrowding and such implications in host country destinations. It is against this background I am delighted to see a paper Conrad King, William Shannon, Micky Lu and myself wrote on international student mobility (#ISM) debunking old models of thinking around international student desires and aspirations, is out. Focusing on #Canada and #New Zealand, we #disrupt #conventional and sometimes #damaging notions of international student mobility as #motivated by #permanent #residency. Instead, we argue that many international students view international study as a #transient experience rather than one that facilitates permanent migration. Given that permanent migration appears to be less of a motivation than traditionally thought and many students in our study are open to #multiple #possibilities after #graduation, and potentially a period of work in the host country, governments in countries like Canada, New Zealand and even #Australia, could also work more closely with their counterparts in source countries to #facilitate #attractive #pathways for these graduates to return home. Amongst the positive implications of transience is how it treats international students: as #agents capable of forming and reforming their own #life #courses. As a concept, it shows that students can actively choose it to enhance their lives, and not simply be disrupted by it. The paper is open access and downloadable. #internationalstudents #internationaleducation #transience #transienceasmethod #mythbusting #decisionmaking

2024 will likely mark the end of the post-Covid boom in international student mobility. While at the onset this sounds like a problem for various countries and higher education institutions that rely on their large international student populations, it is most decidedly not. Of course, students will not stop pursuing education abroad – rather, this simply means that growth will even out to pre-Covid levels, thus enabling both the students and the recipient countries and institutions to focus on the quality of education, rather than the quantity of students annually. It also gives space to new, emerging education hotspots to take centre stage. Places such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and the UAE are now in a unique position to capture the interest of new generations who are more interested in pursuing a high-class education in places where post-graduation opportunities abound. Combined with residency in that area, they will be fully set up for any future developments. We at Henley & Partners Education would be happy to discuss the best opportunities with you and your family. 🌏 Australia’s New Cap on International Students – What It Means for Aspiring Students Australia recently announced a major shift: a cap of 270,000 international student enrollments starting in 2025. This move aims to manage migration and ease housing pressures in major cities, particularly targeting genuine students committed to studying and contributing to the country. What does this mean for students? 🔸 Increased Competition: With limited spots, securing admission will become even more competitive. Academic strength, language proficiency, and financial stability will be essential for standing out. 🔸 Regional Opportunities: The new cap favors regional universities, presenting an excellent chance for students to explore areas beyond the typical urban hubs. Studying in regional Australia not only supports the local community but also offers pathways for extended post-study work visas. 🔸 Financial Preparedness: Stricter requirements mean students should budget wisely and ensure they meet all financial thresholds well before applying. My Advice for Students Looking at Australia: ✔️ Research Early: Understand which institutions align with your career goals and financial plan. Focus on regional universities as well, which may provide additional benefits. ✔️ Meet Language Requirements: Enhance your English proficiency early. Achieving higher-than-required scores can provide an edge. ✔️ Seek Guidance: With new caps and requirements, navigating the application process is more challenging. Working with a counselor can ensure you’re fully prepared to make the most of your application. Australia remains a fantastic choice for higher education, but with these new policies, it’s crucial to approach it strategically. Planning ahead and staying informed are the keys to success. #StudyAbroad #Australia #CareerCounseling #InternationalStudents #Education #StudentSuccess
