In this PBC article, Ross Shenton, our co-founder, shares why it's vital to focus on more than just the quantity of new homes to meet the UK's housing targets. Ross's insights stem from his personal experience—living in a mould-affected home over twenty years ago—which became a key motivation in founding Sano. Millions of UK homes still face issues like poor ventilation, mould, and dampness, which pose serious health risks. As Ross explains, energy-efficient, modern, airtight homes often trap moisture, leading to problems that can harm a home's structure and its occupants' health. Looking forward, Ross envisions a future where AI-driven systems help monitor and manage indoor air quality, keeping homes healthy without constant oversight. You can read the article in full to learn more about the two key ventilation strategies emerging from this.

The Problems With Ventilation In Social Housing; Ventilation is increasingly becoming the challenge that social housing companies face. Proper Ventilation is important in every habitable space, especially in homes because we spend around 90% of our time inside. Without sufficient ventilation, stale air is trapped within buildings causing build up of pollutants and moisture. This causes damage to both structure of buildings and occupant health. 💲Australia's housing crisis is hidden health crisis. My latest article in The Conversation has resonated strongly (12K+ reads in <24 hours). It exposes the shocking reality of "hot bedding" where up to 20 people share a two-bedroom apartment in Sydney, and health and safety risks. 🌍 This ties directly to the World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report 2024, which highlights a critical triple threat for Australia 1) Economic downturn 2) Rising inflation 3) Mounting household debt The impact? Ongoing housing affordability crisis and cost-of-living crisis. Low-income and marginalised households will bear the heaviest burden for the next decade. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gfNcnMsY #TheConversation #HousingCrisis #PublicHealth #Australia #EconomicCrisis

One curious aspect about property tax is that one type of business is allowed to pay private property tax rates on assets which they own for the purpose of generating an income. These are rental properties owned by investors. A fair and correct change is for states to ask rental property owners to pay commercial property tax on their investments. This simple state vote would close a loophole in the tax system, provide needed additional revenues for infrastructure, tilt the housing market back slightly in favour of first home buyers and allow for property tax reductions for small businesses and elderly low income home owners
**Update: This webinar is now sold out. A recording will be made available in the days following. Housing can appear affordable even though it is of such poor quality it affects people’s health, is expensive to heat and cool, or it is located far from employment, with higher commuting costs. So, what should be considered in measuring the real affordability of a home? Join us online this Wednesday 9 October 2024 at 12.00-1.00pm AEDT for a discussion with guest speakers Adam Crowe of Curtin University and Professor Rob Stokes of Macquarie University. The discussion will explore new AHURI research findings on factors that should be included when considering what makes a home genuinely affordable.
